    Jordon had a lever-action Winchester;

    Gault had a Model 8 .35-caliber Remington loaned to him by Hamor;

    Oakley also had a Model 8;

    Hamor had a Model 11 Remington shotgun and the Colt Monitor Machine Rifle.

    All the lawmen also carried handguns. Hinton also had a 16mm movie camera to record the aftermath.
    The Remington Oakley borrowed for the ambush sold for $69,000 13 years ago.

    Exactly.

    And, you know it just chapped J. Edger's buttocks when Frank offered to go after Dillinger for him!

    One thing is for sure. They probably would never be picked up by the current crop of lawyer / accountant "agents."

    They had trouble hefting a 10mm pistol!

    Love it.

    You know, if you think about it, it wasn't all that different back then, Hoover had to bring in the real gunfighters from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, etc., etc..

    It seemed to me the movie focused on Hamer's tracking ability and his ability to know their next move. Something gained from years of experience as a ranger.
    Nowadays I would imagine everyone known to be traveling with B&C would have their relative's houses staked out and phone lines tapped. More of a cast a broad net technique.

    You would be amazed how many notorious criminals actually hide in plain sight. Not many understand the extraordinary lengths one must go to to actually pull it off for a long period of time though. Almost none know how to completely cover their tracks at a crime scene. When there are no tracks, it is often just pure accident. But there is still a need for those old time detectives that have the rare combination of "street smarts", intelligence, and what we used to call "dogged determination" like a bulldog. One I knew once told me there is an almost invisible line between being a good detective and a good criminal.

    @OldChap , like you mentioned earlier in the thread, I really enjoyed researching the B&C story. I've read five books on the topic so far, which equates to having read five different versions of the ambush details, regarding who fired first, who used which firearm, etc... Two of those accounts were from posse members, Hamer and Hinton, and their accounts are quite different. I don't know which version to believe. I've even read B&C's coroner reports to see if their wounds matched up with any of the accounts, and it's still a work/research in progress.

    There are a few more books on the topic I haven't read yet, but will read them over the next couple of months. (Not really expecting any more clarity on the subject, but the research is enjoyable. @OD* and I have spent some considerable time comparing notes, and we still have more questions than answers.)

    Currently, there are two things I am absolutely certain of regarding the ambush: The posse shot B&C to death, and, the intention of the posse members to muddy the waters about details of the ambush was quite successful.

    Absolutely spot on, Reid.

    Excellent post.

    Too much time has past, all the players are dead, we'll never know the complete story I'm afraid.
