I found a hat full about 2 weeks ago. I'm not a big mushroom hunter but there are a few spots on my dads property where the pop up every year. I always check those spots while turkey hunting.

The last few years I have used a Ruger Bearcat 22cal to hunt morels and find only the really big ones require more than one shot!

A few years ago the morels almost over ran the habitat here in New Mexico so they let us use scoped 22 lr rifles for a short special tag season. The morel population was almost decimated so now it is 22 lr pistol only and they are slowly making a comeback. It takes a lot of camouflage and sneaking around and several days to get a limit this year. They are very wiry at this time of year.

You were obviously way under-gunned for morel hunting. Glad you didn't get hurt.

I wish we had morels close to me down here. We do have chanterelle mushrooms though. My hog hunting areas have them but it is easier to jut go to one of our county parks. I like chanterelles better. The flavor is very buttery and meaty. It would be nice to have both available since they are two of the more expensive mushrooms out there.

Lobster mushrooms would be a nice find but I have only seen them in mountain areas. Probably just use a trap for them and not a gun though.

Back when I lived in the midwest, finding Morels in the woods was kind of a rite of spring.
