Not uncommon for ex-military airplanes to be owned by the public, back in the 1980s the Reno Air Races were owned by the P-51 Mustang. Personally I would love to own a T-38, supersonic, two engines, simple to maintain, two holer so I can take a PAX and cheap to operate. I could take off from RDU and visit my sister at KOCF in less than 1 hour.

OK, fill out these forms and we'll call in for your background check. Has your credit union pre-approved your financing or should I call the Sheik to check your credit rating?

I don't think my VISA card will approve this transaction. Or my wife.

For a twin engine, I would prefer an F-15. Talk about a kick-butt aircraft!

I couldn't afford to keep it armed for my daily commute, though.

Even if the 8.5 million price tag doesn't put you off, the total cost per flight hour, per the USAF Comptroller is $22,514. Keep in mind, that cost is for planes that are flown regularly and have a well-trained and equipped support staff and parts supply line in place. I think if you were only flying on weekends and were having some A&P guy from you local FBO maintaining it (which I would not recommend), it could be higher. Also, it takes $5.6 million to train an F-16 pilot, if you could even find civilian training for it.

Some other costs per flight hour. Training costs would be similar to the F-16:
    • T-38 $9,355
    • A-10: $17,716
    • F-15: $41,921
    • F-16: $22,514

One of the most popular and practical "tactical jet warbirds" is the Czechoslovakian L-39 Albatross, which was a basic jet trainer. They can be had for $150,000 to $250,000. Cost per flight hour is around $1,750. It will top out at just over .8 mach, so it is transonic. Any jet- and aerobatic-rate rated private pilot can fly it.

I'd give up a full cask of bourbon for it.

My experience with -38s is they needed a lot of work on a regular basis. We had 3-4 of them at Fairchild for pilot proficiency, and half of them usually had the boat tails off for engine work. Still, it is the Ferrari of trainers.

I wonder how much I would get on trade in for my truck?? Or maybe I should just sell the truck outright to finance the garage expansion.

    RUN AWAY FAST!!!!!!!

It's an A model. Those things are horrible and known for plenty of gremlins crawling around in them. Very hard to keep in the air. Whoever buys it will enjoy getting plenty of seat time on the ground. In the air.......not so much.

If I got it I would park it on my front lawn right under my Gonzales Flag"Come And Take It".
Then we could see how brave those LEO's are if I ever get Red Flagged and they come a knocking.
