    Ultimate "BIG GUN"

I found this quite by accident. I knew vaguely where these facilities wee located, but had never seen one. Today I found one that is in the process of being restored. First you might want to do a little reading and viewing of the photos:

Lawn Atlas Missile Base tour | Reaction Research Society

Then...you might want to see the site from space:

Goto Google Earth and click search. Then type in LAWN MISSILE BASE

The folks who are restoring the site say you can visit it and walk through. This video was made inside the base.

Something to see on a lazy Saturday when you've finished the "honey do's" and an unusual side trip if you're ever in central Texas.

I had a supervisor once who had been cross trained into my career field. He came from the Atlas program, and I think was stationed in NY. He said they had a grand commissioning ceremony bringing the site into official operational status--and a week later shut it down as obsolete...

Yeah...I never realized the "gate sentry" Atlas missile were all dummy, purpose built for display, items. Not a long lifetime, but an effective old bird. Kept the Soviets at bay.

The old bird is still flying...or will be until the ban on importing RD-180 engines and the remaining ones allowed to be imported are used up.

Altus AFB had Atlas missiles stationed around it, driving up SR-44 there was one just a few feet off the road. It still had the chain link fence and Quonset hut, the gate was off the hinges and you could walk up to it but looking down the staircase it was totally flooded.

We have a state park here in Wyoming that is an old peacekeeper missile silo. I think they have them in North and South Dakota and Colorado as well.

The one in South Dakota is just north of Wall, if memory serves.

Being from Arkieville we had 18 Titan II missile sites with staffing based out of the Little Rock Airforce Base. We also had a silo mishap resulting in a payload flying into the wild without detonation. Yep, it got transported down the highways too.

I toured one site while still functional as a youngster. Quite impressive.

Google "scuba missile silo" to link to content pertaining to scuba diving in flooded underground missile facilities around the U.S. These dives were high on my bucket list--until I began my family eighteen years ago. Now nothing but the most benign diving for moi.

Last year we went to visit the Titan missile facility down near the southern border. Very impressive and interesting museum. And, being in Arizona, they do have provisions to check your weapons at the door....

There is a pretty lucrative market in selling renovated missile silos as ultra-secure homes now days. There is a lot of sense in owning such a thing I suppose if things ever go from bad to worse!

@LimaCharlie I read somewhere that the gun crew for that beast numbered 1,500. IIRC they only got 30 shots before having to change out the barrel. The ultimate "see-mine-is-bigger-than-yours" weapon that was enormously useless.

    Trust God.

What would happen if you put the same amount of trust in God that you do in the brakes on what your driving on the highways?

    Think about it.

I read that it took 4,000 men to build the infrastructure and move it.
