Remember I was playing with a mail delivery detector? It's working!

I waited all day yesterday for a package to come via USPS. In the late afternoon, I got an email update saying it would be today or tomorrow

This morning, I got an update that said it would arrive today. I started watching, and walking to the mailbox at about 1:30 pm - the typical time our mail arrives. Well when it got to be 4:00 pm, I got tired and decided to set up a "mail delivered" indicator.

So I got a tennis ball out of the batch I sometimes use for targets, attached it to a string and fed the string under the rear door of the mailbox and tied a small piece of PVC about 8" from the ball to let it drop about 8". I opened the front door, pulled the string tight and pinched it with the front door. Like this:

    Wasn't yesterday, Sunday?

    We don't have Sunday delivery.

I like it, my mailbox does not have a backdoor but a few seconds with a drill I could make something similar.

But my mailbox is about 300 yards from the house and obstructed by acres of oak trees. I like your idea, though.

Maybe if the ball dropped all the way to the ground, your dog's desire to go out and fetch it, and the resulting yapping and scratching at the door, would be a better alert system than having to watch for the ball to drop.

    Thanks!

Almost too cool and basic to believe it came from an engineer isn't it!

Get on the USPS website and find what they call "informed delivery". I get an email about the same time each morning containing scanned images of the front of the mail pieces that day in addition to tracking numbers for packages. Once you have the tracking number, however you choose to get it, Google that number for the USPS tracking website and you can sign up to get a text when it's delivered. Usually within minutes of delivery. Technology!

I was tracking it, and I did get an email, but with all that didn't happen the way it was supposed to, I wanted to be sure. But, the larger reason for this is just to know when any mail has arrived.
