We rode motorcycles from Illinois to New York City and saw the Worlds Fair in 1964. A lot of the exhibits had closed up before we got there. But the General Motors exhibit and the Disney --It's a Small World- were two of the big ones that were still open. That was a trip of a lifetime in those days.

Earworms can kill. In 1980, headmistress of a girls' school Jean Harris shot her former lover, Dr. Herman Tarnowner, to death with a .32 auto. Tarnower was a cardiologist and the main promoter of the Scarsdale Diet, one of the early fad diets. She said she went to his house to commit suicide in front of him and he was accidentally shot while they struggled over the gun. The jury didn't buy it and she got 15 to life.

But during her incarceration, a psychological researcher was allowed to study her. Keep in mind the following was never brought up in court and never argued later to get her out early, so there was no motive to make this story up. The researcher found out that Harris suffered from a persistant earworm for 33 years based on the song "Put the Blame on Mame" sung by Rita Hayworth in the 1946 movie "Gilda." Harris felt the song was sending her messages to do certain things, although she never claimed it told her to kill Tarnowner. However, the earworm ended the night she shot him.

The researcher did feel that insanity might have played a part in the murder. Governor Mario Cuomo commuted her sentence on 1992 when she needed heart surgery and she died of natural causes in a nursing home in 2012.

This current in my house. My daughter and I still try to get each other. You win if you catch the other humming or singing it.
