    Another lost skill

Was standing in line at lunch today when a young man next to me complimented me on my boots.
Asked me how i kept them so shiny?
I explained to him that I polish them every week.
Had no idea what I was talking about, had to explain how I spit shine them.
Guess it is another lost art. They wear sneakers all the time or throw away their shoes when they get too grungy. Mine just get resoled.
I still remember shoe shine stands. it was a real treat to sit in that high chair and have your boots professionally polished.

They don't know because their skinny jeans won't slide over a pair of boots

I spent many a night polishing my church shoes. As you say, mostly sneakers these days, but a pair of well shined shoes makes an impression.

"Little shoeshine boy never get slowed down
But he's got the dirtiest job in town
Bendin' low at the peoples' feet
On the windy corner of a dirty street
Well, I asked him while he shined my shoes
How'd he keep from gettin' the blues
He grinned as he raised his little head
Popped a shoeshine rag and then he said.

Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues
C'mon get rhythm, when you get the blues
A jumpy rhythm makes you feel so fine
It'll shake all the troubles from your worried mind,
Get rhythm, when you get the blues."

Like anyone who's been in the service, I know how to shine shoes!

I do recall some of the country bars I used to frequent would have a shoe shine girl.

I used to always wear boots and kept them shined the same as when I was in the military, now due to the consequences of a stroke (foot drop) I wear cheap sneakers since I only get a few months wear out of them.

I also recall those country bars.
Got your boots polished, and if you were lucky
Got your belt buckle polished too.

We used to have a barber shop here in my town that had a shoe shine stand inside. You could get a good haircut and a shoe shine too, one stop. Now it's hard to find anyone in town who even knows how to cut hair.

Most, maybe all of the US military has gone away from polishing boots now.

I personally donít shine any of my boots. I have a nice pair of dress cowboy boots that I keep nice, but I donít shine them. My boots that I wear at work get a little bit of polish from time to time just to keep them clean looking but all my other boots are not shinable and I just donít really care how they look. They donít cost enough for me to worry about preserving their life any longer than they already last. If I could make my flip flops last longer though, thatís something I could get behind.

    That picture is disturbing.
Men have no fashion sense anymore.
And you figured they would as they are becoming more feminine.

My daughter has an issue with shoe-shine guys. She feels it is "demeaning." I tried to explain many of those guys made a good living that way, and the best of them could put on a show that would draw a crowd. I don't think she gets it.

I'm more of a Bick 4 kinda guy. Over time it builds to a deep soft gloss that paste wax can't mimic. But I get the shock of how some kids don't even know what polish is.

Spent too many hours spit polishing combat boots with Kiwi, and have to say I'm glad we switched to non-shiny boots in the military.
