    Cabelas Veteran Discount

    Intended as a simple PSA.

I went to Cabelas yesterday to buy some practice ammo. My LGS does not stock that ammo, and Cabelas, which for most things is higher priced than my LGS is competitive on ammo, and I can avoid PA’s 6% sales tax. When I checked out the clerk asked if I was a veteran, and I answered yes. I had no idea that they gave a 5% discount to vets. You have to show proof of veteran status. PA has a veterans designation on drivers licenses. I showed that, and that was enough to get the 5%. So my overall saving was 11% with the sales tax saving. I liked that.

Anyway, it dawned upon me that Cabelas is a popular source for many DC members so I thought some might not know they can save 5% on purchases if they can show that they are a veteran. So to those who served and buy at Cabelas save a few pennies.

There are many places that offer military discounts; some post it and others you must ask. You may order online from AAFES even though you do not have retired ID, this is a recent change.

Here is a link to some. https://militarybenefits.info/military-discounts/

And a link to AAFES https://www.shopmyexchange.com/ In the top right there is a button to get you started, you can now order guns on-line but they will have to be delivered to a Exchange with a gun shop.

A lot of us are former Cabela's customers because Bass pro just ruined them. Trigger locks on everything so no trying a trigger before purchase and Bass pro replaced some previously quality Cabela's brands with Chinese knock-offs. The final straw for me was hiring the sharks at Capitol one to run their member cards. Even with 5% off their prices are absurd, even for brick and mortar.

Bass Pro offers 10% off to Vets, as do Home Depot and Lowes. The Bass Pro near me offers it any day, but the one in Palm Bay up the road is only certain days of the month. I assume it is because of the much larger former military population there. HD you only show your ID, but Lowes has switched to a "sign-up" program.

Interesting. They never asked me if I am a veteran when I bought a rifle and ammo there. But, I've learned to ask for such discounts since it's obvious that a lot of places don't mention that they have senior and/or veteran discounts.

I never ask for the discount at Cabela's, but sometimes they ask me. The discount is then given without any papers. Same thing has happened at other places as well.

Some changes I noticed while chasckig out discounts today.

Home Depot discount now only for disabled vets. Not dibbled vets get a discount on special days like Veterans Day.

Lowes is 10% but you now have to register in a store.

Nass Pro and Cabelas is now 5%.

We still get 10% in H.D. And are not a disabled vet, maybe different states do it different? Only bad part are the things on-line at H.D. You do not get the discount and they do get you there if it’s not something they normally carry.

I try to do all the shopping I can on eBay in N. America and keep the money here if possible. Gosh we have boycotted so many businesses due to their changing gun laws or promoting things we are vehemently against.

I like looking at the Cabela's sale prices, because then I know what to pay for non sale prices elsewhere.

Must vary state to state, Sis. Could not get one in OH or AZ. BTW, would you mind changing your avatar. This one is making me queasy. Maybe go back to the one in the line-up?

I went into a Cabelas a couple of weeks ago. Reminded me why I don’t shop there!

HD told me I could order on line and do in store pick up. When picking up if I show ID they will apply the discount. This only applies to items sold at regular price and not to any special discounts or featured sales. Both HD and Lowe's follow this same policy now, and it SUCKS. They have disincentivized me from shopping at either store.

One note about Lowes - it applies to ALL veterans, not just those that retired from the military as many businesses do. Also, you can sign up online to confirm your military status and it is linked to a MyLowes loyalty card. At checkout, I just open the MyLowes app on my phone and they scan a barcode to apply the discount. I'm a loyal Lowes customer - especially since they are responsible for the 1942 M1 Garand siting in my safe. :)

I think the AAFES access for non-retirees and Vets is limited to mail order. Unless something has changed you still need an issued DoD ID card to access military installations, and a trip to the PX/BX isn't an acceptable excuse.
