    Ka-boom!

We had a little explosion here in Houston last night - or rather at 2am in the morning.

    https://www.khou.com/

I have a question. The business that blew up was called "Watson Grinding" and I am curious what they might have on the premises that could create that kind of blast effect?

    http://www.watsongrinding.com/

Employee to Fire Investigator: "I just don't understand it. My CNC machine just went KA-BOOM !"

Our always-ready Police Chief asked residents to look out for "debris and even body parts" on their property!

Sad for the families of the two killed (known so far). Prayers for them.

    Confused.

Lots of heat and sparks in CNC, if a gas escaped from other area (coatings, spraying, etc.) that was volatile the combination would not be pretty.

I always suspect gas leaks in cases like these. I long ago checked off not having natural gas in a house I own.

With a name like Watson Grinding my guess it may have been a dust explosion, several years ago we had a facility down the road in Kinston destroyed by a dust explosion.

Until ways were found to improve air quality explosions were common in something as mundane as flour mills.

Whatever it was, the damage to the surrounding area is pretty extensive. It was so powerful it cracked foundations. We're 5 miles away and we felt and heard it.

I could see a grain elevator with that kind of power - maybe. Or a rocket fuel plant. The bomb squad people are crawling all over the place.

When I was a kid, there was a trucker's strike in Missouri. A sniper on an overpass shot at a truck carrying 20 tons of TNT. We heard the explosion in the middle of the night 20 miles away. The blast obliterated a portion of I-44.

We've had an explosion in an "elevator" at the sugar factory plant here several years ago. Some kind of gas built up inside that somehow got ignited. One person was killed.

I heard about it on the news this morning. The initial report is that it was a natural gas explosion. Glad you Houston guys are safe. My daughter lives there, but nowhere close to the explosion.

Years ago we had a large truss plant catch on fire. The cause was some faulty wiring. There was a large rack of propane tanks for forklifts. The explosions from them and fireballs going skyward could be seen from almost 10 miles away. The fire was so hot that very large structual steel girders were melted and looked like giant melted plastic coat hangers from a distance.

Latest reports say a tank of propylene exploded.

The owner of the facility told Eyewitness News the explosion originated from a propylene tank.
