Lightbulb Vienna Sausage and Potted Meat

    Neither is very good.

But both are MUCH better than what I was force fed almost daily as a kid:

    Braunschweiger

If you're not familiar with it, consider yourself lucky. It's gawdawful, but it definitely met my parents' #1 criteria for kid food: it was the cheapest thing in the store.

I love braunschweiger on rye with Swiss cheese and mustard.
Must be the German in me.

Open the can. Throw out the sausages. Eat the can. It probably has more taste.

I wouldn't say I love it, but I buy a hunk of it a couple times a year. Not really cheap either.
Gotta be Smith's though. A local company whose smoked hams, natural cased hot dogs and braunschweiger has been a mainstay since I was a kid.

As a kid I loved the Underwood deviled ham sandwiches my mom would make for me. Tried it again after 50 years a while back & thought I’d made a cat food sandwich.

And I happen to love both. Learned long ago to pop open a can of BW and eat it cold. Yummy!

Y'all are waxing nostalgic like this stuff is gourmet.
I will take a 3 inch thick ribeye steak rare-medium-rare, loaded baked potato, creamed spinach and a ice cold beer please.

Vienna sausages and potted beast are not on the scale with surf & turf, but can taste great when you have been in the boonies for a few days.

My brothers and I coulda used you around when we were kids. Of course, the way it was served was a smear on white bread with a side dish of cottage cheese. That was lunch almost every day. Like I said, it was cheap and that met my folks' requirement for groceries. No, my mom was NOT a good cook.

When I was growing up my parents got irregular pay checks. [ sometimes monthly, but part of the year it was quarterly]. So we ate a lot of stuff with long shelf life! Vienna sausages went in with beans or spaghetti sauce, never alone. Potted meat got mixed with pickle relish, Mayo, and chopped onion. Not bad on crackers or dark rye bread with cheese.

I'm with a few others, I think they have changed the recipe over the years. It does not taste the same as I remember. DR
