    Baloney at the Gun Counter?

I really thought we'd had a thread a while back about the most ridiculous BS you've heard at a gun counter. I have a couple gems to add, but can't seem to find the thread. Maybe it was on another forum(?).

Anyway, I figured I'd start a new one. Might be a good diversion for some of us who are "quarantined", or under a "Stay at Home" directive. Most of these were actually from sales people, although a few might've been from helpful fellow shoppers:

"No, you can't shoot a .38 Special in a .357 revolver. The bullet is bigger and would get stuck in the barrel."

"No, there's no such thing as a .44 Special. What you're looking for is .44 Magnum."

"The 10mm is just a hot .40 load. You can shoot them in your .40 S&W pistol."

"No, you can't shoot 7.62x51 in your .308 rifle. It would blow it up."

"5.56 and .223 are the same thing. 5.56 is perfectly safe in your .223"

".45 Colt? Here you go - some .45 ACP. It's the same thing."
And, a couple of new zingers, just heard within the last couple weeks:

"Actually, the deadliest handgun round is the .22. When it hits, it bounces around inside you so much it just turns your insides into mush."
    and,

"9x19??? No, we don't carry anything like that. The only 9mm we have is 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, and 9x18 Makarov. 9x19 is a really obscure caliber, and you'll probably have to go online and special order it. I really don't think they even make it anymore!"
I've personally heard every one of these comments at the gun or ammo counter, though to be clear, most of them were from the young experts in the big box stores. The staffs at our LGS's are pretty knowledgeable, and you don't hear much BS from them - just from an occasional customer!

So, please share some of the great Words of Wisdom [Not!] that you've heard in the shop!

I heard one guy boasting to everyone there he was an Army sniper. He pulled a Rem 700 from the rack and did not know how to pull the bolt back. He said the ones the army use are different.

Uh oh I used the same bullets in the 38 Special I loaded as I did with the 357 magnum. I guess the next project will be to pull all the bullets and redo them. First I have to figure out which one is right.

I'm with you on this! I've actually OVERHEARD this BS from Customers (NOT our Sales Staff) discussing Calibers....
I do know, with the Sales Climate out there, some (no all) sales Staff are intentionally driving people (mainly First time buyers) in this direction above, in order to help boost a sale. NOT the way we, as Professionals (myself included) want this way to go, but some Clowns out there don't give a Rat's Rump about it....
Myself, I politly interject and point people to into the right direction (38spl CAN be shot in a 357Mag, etc) Some people, while in a panic mode see "357 Sig" as being able to shoot in the 357 Mag and vic versa....
    44Spl CAN be shot in a 44 Mag....etc..
Some shop Clerks are CLUELESS beyond belief!

I have found that "old experts" are just as dangerous and have the same likelyhood of spewing stupid crap.

Some recent examples- Normal "9mm" can be shot in a P64, .32 auto can't be fired in 7.65x17mm, and .40 is worse than 9mm and an ineffective caliber for defense.
Arkancide- Three self-inflicted gunshots to the head with hands tied behind the back.

Active Shooter Response- Assess the situation, Position yourself to gain tactical advantage, Engage perpetrator violently (APE).

Having worked the counter in a gun store, I could write a book about the stupid, silly, and surprising things I have heard from customers and sales people.

A 6' guy in his early twenties points at a 6" Ruger GP100 .357 magnum and says to his 6' friend in his early twenties, "My friend let me shoot his .357 magnum. My hand and arm were numb for a week. I will never do that again." His friend replied, "I will never try to shoot one."

It is amazing how many people were military operators. With a couple of simple questions, most are exposed for stolen valor.

It is amazing how many sales people will tell a customer that a .22 LR revolver is the best for self-defense because it is the number one killer round.

A sheriff deputy told my dad recently the one about a .22 being the best caliber because it tumbles. Let's just say I told my dad a different story.

My favorite load of gunshop ....

    Baloney at the Gun Counter?-texas-load-bull.jpg

Is, "You really need a 45ACP. You shoot someone in the arm with that thing and it will blow their arm off and kill them deader than a door nail."

I always wondered what it was about door nails that made them appear dead!

"I want a shotgun for "Home Defense" ok I say.... what Barrel length? Ohhh ANY...."The LONGER the better" I jokingly pull one off the rack (28" Rem 870) here's the New VIAGRA shotgun.....sure to please.....They ACTUALLY thought it was the Model of the shotgun!!! Like I said before in other Posts, Some people are Clueless!
BTW, I told them I was just kidding with them (2 guys who came in to buy the gun) when we were making out the Paperwork! They STILL didn't get it....

Look at the bright side. Lack of intelligence behind the gun counter is useful as your "intelligence". You now know to avoid that operation.

The smartest folks are often those who say "I don't know" the most. A big part of being smart is knowing what you don't know.

As for some of the folks on "our" side of the counter mentioned above - they're unfortunately everywhere. I generally shut up unless something is immediately dangerous. Otherwise you're wrestling with a pig.

A Taurus Judge with a .410 shotgun shell will spread out and blow a large hole clean through a bad guy.

A shotgun will cut a guy in half.

Tell them the .45ACP will also chamber and fire doornails. :D

I work the sight-in service at the gun club. A new hunter/new shooter bought a rifle and scope from a big box store and drove over fifty miles to sight in his rifle. The rifle was a .300 Winchester Magnum. His ammo was .300 Remington Ultra Magnum. He was not happy when I told him it wouldn't fit.

A new hunter/new shooter bought a Savage 110 .338 Lapua with a 30" barrel and a high power Nightforce scope from a big box store. He wanted it sighted in at 100 yards for whitetail deer hunting in the coast range. I told him he could stay home in the Willamette Valley and shoot Elk in the coast range with his gun.
