Carrying in any manner or not, when at work one is representing the employer. One should not do anything to embarrass the employer. One should not make statements on behalf of the employer except with permission and then in line with one's duties.

I don't carry open normally. In those few instances I do, I attempt to be as courteous and cheerful as possible. Then again, I attempt to be courteous and cheerful at all times.

Sometimes I do better than other times.

Most people just assume I'm a cop. Most of the time, I don't think they even notice I'm carrying. For sure no one takes it as an act of passive aggression. Like Havok said. It's just a comfortable way to carry. As for the cops, even they don't care. The last officer who pulled me over said "I don't care but thanks for telling me" when I told him I was a CHL and I was armed. He didn't even look at my CHL. Since I'm not a nitwit, my hands were on the wheel as I told him that.

It's a fuzzy memory from the whole "WORLD IS GOING TO END BECAUSE OF OC" that the antis drummed up when it was being debated. It may have been the Austin or SA police chief.
"It will be like the wild west, gunfights in the streets on a daily basis!".

Have we had even one such fight erupt between two people legally OC'ng yet in any state?

There was a biker who got SWATTED in Fairfax VA when I lived there a few years ago. He went into a convenience store OC'ing, which was not prohibited. An anonymous phone tip said the guy was threatening. As he rode off from the store, he got swarmed with cops with guns out. They questioned him and questioned people in the store and determined that he had not threatened anyone.

They traced the call, interrogated the caller and arrested her. IIRC, she was part of some anti-gun group. I never learned the disposition of her case. In NOVA, she probably got off with the legal backing of her group. Knowing the Fairfax Police, I think the guy was lucky he didn't get shot or arrested.

Now in VA we have local governments flagrantly violating state law by declaring some public events are "no carry zones" for "public safety." So far, that hasn't been tested in court although the VCDL is working on that. I see people around Richmond who OC and I think that's fine. I do find myself staring, thinking, "Hmm...nice piece. Is that a Gen. X or a Gen Y?"

I only OC at VCDL rallies. The last time I did, I was walking down a street downtown wearing a polo, shorts and a Smith Model 28. I got some stares. One "street person" for lack of a better term, said in a teasing voice, "What you doin' carrin' that hog leg down here?" I said calmly, "The law says I can." He said, "Right on!"

What's in bold is an unfair statement to Fairfax County. I was with a neighboring LE agency for 30 to Fairfax and they are a well respected and well trained agency. They are large and with large comes more mistakes more often but even then I believe they are minimal in nature. I've had many friends with this agency and I think your statement is incorrect.

I moved out into the country in VA but when I worked in NOVA I don't recall ever receiving or hearing of a call for service regarding someone carrying OC. It's legal of course in VA but I know some can't handle it. Where I am now you see more carrying. I was in our local Walmart one day when a family of 4 came in carrying OC. Two looked like the grandparents while the two kids looked to be grandkids but were over 18. Was a funny site to be sure. A family I doubt anyone will mess with.

Keep in mind a lot of people join this site everyday (very recent for me) and do not see the old topics and a search is not always effective if you don't title it correctly.

True. I remember the crazy Californian in this thread, though. It kind of went off the rails for a bit when he posted.

Maggie and I just had a quick conference.

She thought closing it was the appropriate course of action.

We can have these conversations but they do not need to descend into snarky personal attacks.
