What is your "social credit" score?

Another thread about the government considering monitoring social media to predict criminality before it happens got me interested in the topic. Consider this: China now keeps "social credit" scores on its citizens between 350 and 950. What makes your score go up can be things like paying bills on time, donating blood regularly or taking an elderly parent to a doctor. What can make your score go down can be things like excessive video gaming, criticizing the government, late payments, failing to sweep the sidewalk in front of your store or house, smoking, playing loud music on trains or jaywalking. The consequences can make a difference between whether you can travel outside the country or not, what schools your kids can get into and a host of other things

So, this may sound far-fetched for the US, right? Nope, forms of it already exist. The only difference is being done by private companies. Insurance companies are now taking individual social media posts into account in setting insurance rates. HR departments are checking social media to decide if someone gets hired. Uber and AirBNB rate their customers and will not accept customers with really low scores. There is a subscription service that bars can sign up for that flags unruly bar patrons. NY State has proposed having a buyer open up the last three years of their social media accounts to scrutiny before you buy a gun.

As I said in another thread, it is well documented that the FBI has an RFP out to develop software that can search social media for people posting material that might indicate they are dangerous. So the technology exists and the government has an interest in it. Could it be in the future you can only pass a NICS check if our "social credit" score is over 700? And if your score is under 500, you are red flagged?

Hey, I use social media in vetting clients for my service business...if I don't like what I see on social media...they can find someone else.

The last thing I posted on my Facebook page were the eclipse pictures I took last year. I do belong to a few private pages but you must be approved to join, unless a member you cannot accesses any info there. I don’t twit or use any of the other social media; I prefer to interact face to face with people.

    Lowest score is 350? I guess I’m a 350.

That's a very, very big difference. There is risk that government will adopt similar strategies, of course; but what's changed isn't the government's willingness to surveil, but the way that the people willingly put all their information into databases.

Good point. However, it is hard nowadays not to put personal data online without getting disconnected from the data and information we want. You and I are putting possibly sensitive information online by posting here. I'm not saying we on this site are vulnerable right now, but at some point we could be. And I think the government adopting such a strategy is more a reality than a risk. I think the FBI RFP I mentioned shows it is in motion. What we don't know is whether that is the whole iceberg, or just the tip.

Think we should start our own social credit score.
Tick off a liberal +10 points
Buy a new sporting rifle +100 points
Learn how to reload ammo +50 points
Teach a youngster to shoot +200 points
    Carry a sidearm +500 points
Vote a socialist out of office +1000 points

My social credit score is 0 at least it is with the liberal, anti-gun coworkers and management at the company I work at.

There is a mild push these days to make folks think that there is "something" wrong with them if they are NOT on "social" media.

Personally I don't need friends that aren't really my friends and I have no need or desire to share when I take a shower or go out to dinner.

And I've never sent any Selfies.

This forum is as social as I ever get.

I think I was just convinced to stop posting on this forum. I hazard to guess what Big Brother thinks of my social credit score based on what I've posted here and elsewhere.
