1911 safety keeps “clicking” off while in holster

I’ve been carrying “cheaper” commander 1911’s for awhile, iwb, in hybrid holsters. The cheaper ones I’ve used tend to have smaller type thumb safeties on them. Well I’ve got myself a Kimber stainless pro carry 2 and I’ve been carrying it iwb in the same exact holster I used for the cheaper 1911’s for awhile now. This Kimber seems to have a bit of a larger thumb safety on it and I’m hearing it click off throughout the day where it’s rubbing on the high leather sweat shield of the backer. Typically I just reach down and turn it back on if I hear it click, but living and working on a farm with equipment going I don’t always hear it click off. So question is, is this a common thing with 1911’s in iwb hybrid holsters and I just never really heard about it or do I need to either put a smaller thumb safety on it like my RIA and Taurus 1911’s had on them or find a different iwb hybrid holster that’ll work better with the larger safety this Kimber has?

I thought about punching a hole in this holster, but then I thought the safety would kinda go into that hole and that may make it worse when I’m moving around? Idk that the gun moves around, maybe I need to check and tighten the retention up some. This never happened in this holster with any of my other 1911’s. Only this Kimber.

A deeper detent, in the thumb safety lever, might help, but, really, I would be inclined to adopt a different holster.

Edited to add: Make sure that the plunger tube is SOLIDLY in place. If the plunger tube is OK, make sure that the plunger has enough spring pressure, bearing against the detent in the thumb safety. Something could be interfering with the plunger or its spring.

A deeper detent in the thumb safety WILL resolve the issue.
But, far less of a modification than you might think is what will solve the problem.
It's a delicate operation that requires hardly any real metal removal.

I completely agree; One of the first things I check on any 1911 I buy is how positively the thumb safety actuates. if it is what I consider a light safety, I have the same operation done and get the spring detent and a good, stiff spring in the plunger tube done right. I carry 1911s every day, I make sure that sort of thing doesn't happen. Holsters quite literally need to be very snug around the gun with no play whatsoever, any holster that doesn't fit properly is passed over for purchase or trash canned........

It is not really a problem. It is in the holster, the trigger "should" be covered. You still have the grip safety. Just make sure that you keep your finger along the frame and off the trigger until needed and you will be fine.

Can’t say I’ve had this happen, even with this same model gun, with holsters that both do and don’t come up high enough to have a backing behind the safety. Is it catching the edge of the holster or somethjng?

May be a problem with the holster , how you wear it as in position and height . I used a comp-tac hybrid for almost 19 years with a old Neutral model and now a MTAC and my colt commanders never clicked off safe !! I do prefer a GI safety but I have carry carry time with my wifes kimber with the standard mid size thumb safety and had no issues with it ether in a 1911 kydex body or in a m&p body . I also have no problems with my m&p with thumb safety's that I carry occasionally . I wear at a 3:00 position adjusted higher on my side .

I like 1911's, but more and more, I am moving into the camp that a defensive handgun should be carried with the firing mechanism in a completely non-energized state.

Ok so I looked everything over on the gun and holster this morning and was also a little more conscious about what it was doing and when. I carry it in a hybrid holster one side is kydex of course and the other side is a little more rubber like feeling then leather feeling. It’s an alien gear 3.5 cloak tuck. Same exact holster I used for my RIA and taurus commander when I carried those with 0 issues, and also with my shield m2.0 with manual safety again with 0 issues. I carry between the 3 and 4 o’clock position IWB. The gun retention is set where I can hold the holster upside down with a loaded mag and the gun won’t fall out, but I can still draw it just fine. I believe what’s happening is the sweat shield when im wearing the holster is pushed up against the safety hard enough by my skin and the grip sticks back behind me far enough that when I sit down in my pickup seat and tractor seats that kind of wrap around me they are pushing forward on the gun grip and the gun can shift forward in the holster just enough that it’s kicking the safety off.

Guns with large. 1911-style external safeties need to be carried in holsters, either leather or kydex, which have been molded around the safety in the fire position. Hybrid holsters generally do not fit that bill.

I would do whatever it takes to cure the problem. Send the gun back to Kimber or a gunsmith for repair, get another holster, replace the safety with a GI safety. Since you said everything is fine with your GI safeties on your other 1911s and that your safety feels like it has about the same detent as your other 1911s, I tend to think it is a holster issue. I like the FIST #12 for kicking around the farm.

Agreed, sounds like a holster issue.

I doubt the pistol has a GI style thumb safety, nobody uses them anymore except reproductions. The GI's had the small shelf.

I to will simply suggest the ignore feature be used too .

Tell the op what you think , not me . Maybe you were corn-fused .

I have 18 years with one holster brand and model hybrid and 3 more with one of there other hybrid holsters now and still like the oldest one just fine .
No need, no worries, all good. Thanks.
