What would you choose for Home Defense with a Ruger Mini-14 with a 1/9 twist

(1) Federal Premuim .223 Rem 55gr. Sierra GK-BTHP

(2) Federal 69gr. Sierra MK-BTHP

(3) Winchester PowerPoint 64gr.-SP

(4) Hornady TAP-FPD-75gr.

Of the choices I selected Winchester PP. I have no experience with the TAP and the 75 grain bullet may not stabilize in your 1:9 Barrel.

That 69 gr. Sierra bullet is a match bullet, so I'd rule it out immediately.

I think bullet stabilization isn't a serious consideration at home-defense distances. Even out to 100 yards, the "wrong" twist rate for a given .223 bullet weight will still be within "minute of bad guy" accurate.

I load 60 gr Ballistic tip Nosler. Makes a pretty good mess of whatever it hits.

I was just planning on sending about 30 rounds of standard fmj as a greeting card.

Either the Winchester or Hornady would probably work just fine.

As another member commented the Sierra BTHP are match bullets - their terminal performance is not likely to be all that good.

I have a reasonable stock of 55grain soft point and hollow point ammo from a couple different manufacturers that I'm confident will work just fine. I now have a 16" AR with a 1:7 twist in the barrel, so I can shoot the newest, latest, greatest, highest speed, lowest drag all-copper bullets as soon as I get around to care enough to buy some. Until then, I'll sleep well at night knowing that a 55 grain SP or HP bullet at over 3000 FPS will work just fine.

As far as using 55 grain FMJ goes....yes, that is probably an "okay" plan - since when it's in a human body, and FMJ round will start to break apart at the cannelure as soon as it starts yawing - but there are two potential problems with that idea.

#1. It only works if the velocity of the round is over 3000 FPS at the moment of impact - otherwise the bullet stays together.

#2. If you have rounds that miss the badguy and go into objects, I'd guess that FMJ will penetrate an object and "keep on trucking" to a greater extent than a bullet of equivalent weight that is a soft point, hollow point, or even a Nosler.

Most any of those on the list would work for me as to stopping the threat. To me what you need to ask yourself is where these rounds will be used. Heavier round give more penetration so more app to shoot through walls with damage on other side. But I see most any rifle round going through walls.

My pick of those on list would be the "Federal Premuim .223 Rem 55gr. Sierra GK-BTHP". I have use this round to take deer and had no problem with dropping them. But it comes to shot placement.

It's not on your list, but I'm using Winchester PDX1 Defender.
I don't have any personal experience with it, but I did watch a demo of PDX1 in .308 and that thing dumped every bit of energy in the gel and stopped 14" in. I was very impressed.
