Ok i went a shooting this weekend with the 454 and 500 all this is my opinion and Feel of palm ... kind of like seat of pants feel.

Ok as for ammo i was shooting the

300 Grain JSP Winchester
http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/handgundetail.aspx?symbol=X454C22&cart=NDU0IENhc3VsbA==

Says around 1600fps at the Muzzle

For the 500 S&W i used Magtech
400 Grainer says about 1600fps out of it at muzzle also soory magtech doesnt list it on the site.

Ok so I warmed up with the 454

Funny thing was i couldnt hit squat had uncle calling shots and even though i was aiming at same point was low high low high couldnt hit Squat.

So after shooting the 500 and hitting well with it i though i would try out the 454 again

BUt NOOOO that aint gonna happen

Ok this is a SRH 7.5 Inch Barrel and shooting it i forgot that after 12 rounds with Pac grips it Starts to hurt so after 12 and not hitting Squat was time to go to 500

So shooting the 500

Touched off the first one and i had to wonder out loud was that a week load? cant be right that was actually pretty tame.

So a reload of 5 and all 5 off hitting good and going hey this is way tame cant be right i mean theres Recoil but nothing like the 454.

My uncle shot the 454 and couldnt hit anything but course we didnt see the little break in the Red Dot

He also thought the 500 was Way tamer

So my thoughts on this are man its a tame shooter and the Gun Rag Writers are full of bull..

"its brutal .. itll break your wrists blah blah blah"

What a crock funny as i was thinking this i was reading a rticle by john Taffin stateing basiclly the same stuff from when the 357 magnum was made.. No one needs a gun this powerfull few will master it .

Well all i can say if it comes up and your deciding between the 454 and the 500

Get the 500 as much as i love my 454 the 500 is a easy shooter

Now if Smith will come out with a NON Performance Center 6" 460 i will have one and sell the SRH..The Muzzlebrake in the Xframe Really works.

One of the Fellows i know said the 460 is a easyer shooting Pistol than the 500 if so it must be smooth.

Might have to go Fondel a 8 3/8ths inch one but i sure dont like a Barrel that long

Nice comparison Bud. I've always thought I'd go .454 because a .454 will chamber .45 LC. I'm not aware that .500 S&W will chamber anything but .500 S&W.

I've heard the "break your wrists" thing about the .357 Magnum, the .44 Magnum, and anything bigger from people who should know better. I've been admonished for shooting such guns too because of the safety hazard it creates.

only thing the 500 will chamber is the 500 SP that corbon is making..

As to the 454 45 colt thing it doens work but point of aim is way different .. Another reason i will probley go with the 460 is it will shoot all 3 .. What the heck its only money look for that review sometime next year

That Win 300 grain seems (in ft lbs) a lighter load than the Hornady 300 - 1700 ft lbs as against nearer 1850.

I do find the 454 is about the harshest recoil - and wonder what the SAAMI pressure is on the 500. 65,000 IIRC for the 454 and that is some pressure!!

If 500 lower and loaded therefore lower - maybe it'll feel more like my BFR throwing 405 grainers - and that is way lower pressure.

I still want a 460 but buying the 220 SIG has screwed that for me - well for some while.

Thx for report Bud
