A note from my cousin...it's getting desperate in NY

This is the e-mail I got from my cousin today. Our whole family is from upstate NY and has lived there for many generations, so it's not that easy to just up and move:

"What scares me is the provision for a reward for someone turning in someone for a violation. My Glock 23, which I used as a police officer, is a violation because of its 13 round magazine as is my M-1 Carbine because it has a 15 round magazine and a bayonet lug. It was manufactured in Jan 1944 and is a collectors item! Anonymous "Tips" by neighbors for rewards reminds me of what it was like in Communist USSR when I was a kid."

We're living in some dark times that seem to be getting darker.

I offered to keep his guns for him (all kidding aside) until the state of NY gets some sensible leadership...or at least sensible laws.

I wish them all the luck in the world during these times. I understand staying and fighting for what is right. I just hope they do not get hurt in the cross fire...

A friend of mine, Eddie, at my old job is, I guess would be called, first generation Cuban. His parents came to the US when Castro took power. The concept of reporting people, being used in NY, is the same exact type of thing Eddies parents talk of when Castro took control of Cuba.

We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded...

I have no sympathy at all for your Cousin. He is probably also hiding a Jewish family up in his attic. Your Cousin needs to be ratted out. His forbidden firearms need to be confiscated and he needs to be sent to the camps.

That is incredible. To have to worry about such things in America.... God I hope the voters in NY wake up. But is expect most won't - the state is ruled by the Big Apple, and most of the citizens in that city have never experienced the freedoms they have so willingly voted away.
I could use the $500, what is his name and address?

Seriously, did Glock ever make 10 round magazines?

Jeanlouise, I think your cousin should take you up on storing at least the M-1.

I'm originally from upstate NY and I can sympathize with your family. I loved that area and if it weren't for taxes and socialists I would move back. Oh, and the winter. I hope he gets the guns to you for safe keeping before he gets ratted out. What a shame. I really miss the Catskill mountains.
Thank you for sharing. I live in a state that leans conservative, but the leadership is not bold enough IMO. I do not think the Nebraska state leadership would enact anything on its own contrary to the 2nd Amendment, but I can see them not doing anything to preempt what the feds are doing (as we see in some states making enforcement of these new gun control laws illegal). Not doing anything preemptive will result in us being trapped, IMO, at some point when it is too late.

As such, I have been wondering about ways to protect my weapons, in as legal a manner as possible. They are no use to me if I cannot access them hastily for protection. I absolutely reject the federal and state government's trespass on the 2nd Amendment and if I did not have young children to feed, I would be fine with civil disobedience, even to the point of being arrested.

I have had a few thoughts on ways to legally ride the storm, but they are beyond me personally and I have wondered if the are feasible and or legal. While I think I know the laws fairly well, it never ceases to amaze me how the government can define the terms in anyway to serve their purposes.

As some have probably seen, there was a video recently of the state trooper who compared an AR15 to a version of the Ruger M14 (I think it was that, someone correct me if I am wrong) that was not within the definition of the assault weapon ban (no pistol grip, no bayonet lug, no collapsing/folding stock, no carrying handle, etc.) Otherwise they had the same function and capability. Anyhow, so here is what I was wondering. Why not create a conversion kit, using an AR15 as an example, that eliminates the "assault weapon" attributes? Provide a fixed stock without a pistol grip, etc., etc., etc. to end up with what is essentially the same rifle, but not one that falls under the ban. Couple that with 10 round magazines and it would seem one could avoid giving up the rifle.

Now do not take my thought the wrong way. I am not advocating we accept the blatantly unconstitutional infringements upon the 2nd Amendment; however, if left no other choice, would this solution work or not? I am not wondering about the technical or mechanical feasibility, mankind can solve anything along such lines. I am wondering if it would work with respect to the law?

My first thought is even if it did negotiate the ban, the current administration would either make new laws or redefine the terms of existing laws.

Does anyone have expertise on these two points? What is the feasibility of creating such kits and would they move such a weapon off the ban list?

Sounds like a business in the making. Since except for mag capacity it is a cosmetic issue, fix the cosmetics: our
wives do this every day without changing their functionality. The cosmetics industry is huge, and so too would be
a conversion industry for the existing non-conforming weapons.

And re: post 7, the answer is yes-- of course they did. Earlier G 17 and G19s came with 10 rnd magazines as the
now extinct Federal AWB was in effect.

So far, notwithstanding some comments above, there are no new Federal laws in play. NY and CO have done what they
have done. NY is 150% over the top and they are already backpedaling. CO seems to be much more reasonable.
CO however won't make anyone on either side happy; which probably means they've got it about right. Not from the
perspective of participants here, but in terms of finding a middle ground.

A definitive answer as to what the parameters for possession of weaponry by non-LE non-military people won't happen
unless one of several things occur. 1) The Supremes are more definitive than they were in Heller with regard to
what regulations States may impose; 2) the states themselves come to some consensus; 3) Congress defines the
limits.

I left the state of Maryland 17 years ago and never looked back. I know there are those who say you should stay and fight, I think NY and Maryland are lost causes. I am bolstering the ranks down here in SC!

I say he takes you up on the storage Jeanlouise, and in a year, I think this Bull capitol S with a Hit will be done away with and it will almost be normal. I think even the supporters of the Current Whitehouse Occupants are getting restless.
How else can you explain the firearms and ammo shortage?

If he takes you up on the offer, I think you'll have his guns for a LONG LONG time.
...if you do him that favor...make sure you have him ship them or deliver them himself to an FFL in your state who will run a firearms form on you for the Feds...plus anything your state requires...before you take possession of them...no sense helping him puts you in a bind...after that...enjoy shooting!!! tell him when Rush says NY politicians have improved, you'll be glad to send them back to him...

Don't know if this is sarcasm but why would you go through an FFL? It is not transfer of ownership, I don't think they have started registration yet. I think can take my own weapons where I please and store them elsewhere.

Yes
...nope...not sarcasm...

...Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide (ATF publication 5300.4 9-05) General Questions section B ...(B1-B11) ought to get all the points in question answered...it is a transfer in the eyes of the ATF...the law doesn't deal with your taking them where you please and storing them unless you lie to them about what's going on...but her receiving them...and she doesn't want to dance around with the ATF...much easier to just follow the law and nobody pays anything but fees and shipping...

A lot of folks forget that the original AWB was in place for 10 years.

Handgun absolutely must go via FFL to FFL. I can't comment on the other items as I don't have a need to know
that portion of the law. My guess is that the rifles can merely be handed over but I am not 100% sure so
don't listen to me; ask someone who knows.

Bet HG knows.
Well I don't see it, I know they cannot be shipped but B1 seems to explicitly allow.
