Has any good came out of F&F? Not that it makes things like this and the other killings acceptable, I'm just curious.

July 5, 2013, 12:45 p.m.

WASHINGTON—A high-powered rifle lost in the ATF’s Fast and Furious controversy was used to kill a Mexican police chief in the state of Jalisco earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records, suggesting that weapons from the failed gun-tracking operation have now made it into the hands of violent drug cartels deep inside Mexico.

Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, the police chief in the city of Hostotipaquillo, was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire. Also killed was one of his bodyguards. His wife and a second bodyguard were wounded.

Local authorities said eight suspects in their 20s and 30s were arrested after police seized them nearby with a cache of weapons — rifles, grenades, handguns, helmets, bulletproof vests, uniforms and special communications equipment. The area is a hot zone for rival drug gangs, with members of three cartels fighting over turf in the region.

The current administration is so hell bent on making guns and gun owners look bad that they implement a program like F&F without thinking of the other likely outcomes. That type of thinking and planning is the kind of stupidity that criminals exhibit (and a contributing factor to why many of them get caught). More and more senseless killing and violence - all just to make a point.

Agreed. It appears as if they completely disregarded the most likely outcomes.

Even worse, IMO, they disregarded all possible outcomes other than the one desired outcome: "proof" that guns were bad, by showing whose hands they could get into. Well, they are getting proof of that, in spades. Talk about horrible mission planning. Plan to discredit the American "gun" culture, but instead shoot yourselves squarely between the eyes. Dumb x2.

F&F ... Fast and Furious? We should rename it to Farcical and Felonious. More apt, by a long shot.

HA! As much as I would love to see it happen, there's just no way the US government can allow it. In fact there's no way the Mexican government would even pursue it...

Not to get the current implementers off the hook but wasn't this initiated during the Bush administration?

Checked Wikipedia Bush Operation Wide Receiver 2006- 2008
Obama Operation Fast and Furious 2009-2011

The first documents I've seen with regard to F&F were from 2009. Obama owns that operation. Gun walking operations that took place under the Bush administration (Operation Wide Receiver... also a bad idea) were initiated after receiving info about suspicious purchases. The ATF later observed straw purchases, and let the guns walk with the assurance that Mexican authorities were on the same page and would be in place to follow up. Apparently, the police in Mexico cannot be trusted... who knew?

At least there was some resemblance of a plan for Wide Receiver which let 450 guns go missing. F&F had no plan what-so-ever to follow the purchasers or seize the guns and lost track of 2000 of them.

Don't let the facts get in your way, but 'Fast & Furious' had a significantly better recovery rate on the firearms than did 'Wide Receiver'. They were *both* incredibly bad ideas, but F&F had a better implementation, despite the popular rhetoric from Republican politicians.

A semi-automatic WASR rifle, the firearm that killed the chief, was traced back to the Lone Wolf Trading Company, a gun store in Glendale, Ariz. The notation on the Department of Justice trace records said the WASR was used in a “HOMICIDE – WILLFUL – KILL –PUB OFF –GUN” –ATF code for “Homicide, Willful Killing of a Public Official, Gun.”
I am so sick and tired of that stupid and overused statement I want to scream in the face of any so-called “reporter” it is not the gun, it is the CRIMINAL behind the gun. If they are unable to understand such a concept then get a job that that may better fit their abilities to comprehend the difference between the abilities of an inanimate object and a human being.
