Let's see if I can post a picture. The one on top is still in the building process. The top two are D2 and the boot dagger is ATS34. Anyone else here make their own blades?

I've thought about it, but haven't quite gotten up the gumption to do it. Do you start with prefab blanks or just a chunk of steel?

iv made some blades since i work in the metal fab industry i like to use old wood files for skining knifes have never made a combat knife kewl pic

I start from scratch with bar stock. Acually made a living at it for a little while several decades ago. Always wanted to learn forge work but never had the chance. I tend to be more trusting of my own work although I do have a Benchmade automatic I've been known to carry. I'ts legal here.

Old files make great working blades. They take a great edge. For combat blades a "springier" more resilient steel is more in line. Old truck springs are a great choice I've seen used. If you want some nice pre mades look at Texas Knifemakers Supply. Good people and I trust them with my heat treating, reasonable prices to.

in repli to el you can heat the center on the file to red hot and let it cool or quench it and it will give you more flex to the blade. i use a torch with a small brazing tip . but leaves you with the hard sharp edge experament with it till you find the flex you like i get the files at the flea market . masters test in the knife makers guild is being able to flex the knife two inches in either direction and it should spring back when presure is off . dont know if this helps but like i said iv made a few for hunter friends they love em not braging would love to make one for combat aplications

Yep, I've Made A Few

I've made a few for myself & I've given a few away.

I've only ever sold a few fishing knives & a couple of hunting knives & Bowie Knives.
Never really made them for the $$$.

For some super NICE Damascus blades try Damascus USA.

They have their forged Damascus blade styles made outside the US but, they are Very Good quality. In fact Excellent and the prices are VERY fair for Layered Damascus.

I did some experimenting many years ago - and yes, using old files and truck/car springs. Most enjoyable to do.

Never really persevered tho and probably will never get back to it but - it is most satisfying and also potentially frustrating when it comes to getting the heat treatment just right!

I started to get into it a few years ago, had supplies tools and a couple small machines. It's tough to run machinery on an apartment balcony and NOT upset the neighbors so the machines are at my Mom and Step-Dad now ... he's a tool junkie so I thought he was gonna cry when I set them up for him. :wink:

I started out by taking over the laundry space in a mobile home. Actually set up a grinder and a bench top drill press. When I finally went full time I did have a little more space. Got offered an apprenticeship with one of the top names about the time I bought a boat to go sailing over the horizon. Tough choice but I went sailing.....
