I am reading a requirement for holsters to be used at International pistol shooting confederation world championship in august of 1977 held in then Salisbury,Rhodesia.

All holsters must be able to retain weapon while doing a backward flip without the weapon falling out of holster. If pistol falls out during the backflip the weapon must be retained with a strap during the competition.

I wonder how many of todays fancy leather holsters could pass this test without the strap.

Thats the beauty of the non-leather holsters like Comp-Tac and others that you can adjust to retain you'r weapon.

Team Results from 1977 shooting confederation world championship

1. Rhodesia 8,776
2. United States of America 8,735
3. South Africa 7,808
4. Great Britain 7,437
5. West Germany 6,941
6. Belgium 6,465

Individual Standings
1. Dave Westerhout 1,960.433 Rhodesia
2. Peter Maunder 1,844.030 Rhodesia
3. Raul Walters 1,802.289 United States of America
Many other listed on page 51 of March 78 Soldier of Fortune

Lots of leather holster have adjustable tension also.

Course i dont plan on doing a backwards somersault nor a front flip etc etc

So i dont even really see the point of the test other thank for kicks

My reply to Bud Whites comment:

Maybe they wanted a real life combat type test.

Not just some play game stuff that many think is real today.

I doubt I could do a back flip any more!

Tho if pressed I'll happily do a backward roll or forward somersault - that's about my limit.

A backflip being real life combat test type??????

I think I'd rather be finding cover while rambo can do the backflips.

Molded Holsters

The tightly molded leather holsters by the top rig makers are so well formed to the individual handgun that I'm best guessing (that with a proper gun belt) "No Problems At All" passing that test.

I'll never buy another holster with a retention strap unless it's intended for canoing or wilderness trekking & then I'd probably opt for a full flap protective cover.

for wilderness /field use I prefer a lanyard. 1 more level of security from loss, yet still offers easy access.

Instead of Rambo, I think you mean Chuck Norris!

Ummm... who does the flip?

I'm thinking that _I_ couldn't pass the test to be in the competition, let alone my holster.

I would guarantee that my leather holsters will stand to the challenge, easy. What is not so easy is the back flip.

I can see it now,

Breaking News..............

Man breaks neck attempting an impossible back flip to prove gun will not fly out of holster in order to retain his spot in gun competition. Full story on this DS at 9:00.............
