As I stated in another thread I have not been practicing much since before the move and my first time shooting in months last week was kind of disappointing.
Not that I could not still score hits on a torso but, my expectation is putting it where I want it.
Today I started going back to more frequency of practice with less rounds and doing intentional drills like I used to do. A cold 5x5 or something that challenges the skill level.

Today I did 15 rounds of timed draw from concealment and fire one round @ 7 yards. My best was 1.65 and my worst was 2.20. Average of 1.89. Not exactly lightning. I am carrying with a new extended clip and the gun is riding a bit lower than my previous setup. Also, since I rarely pocket carry, I went back to the rubber Rossi grip which fits my hand perfectly and gives me a better finger reach to the trigger since it has some meat on the backstrap.
I reloaded from a belt carried speedloader in between but I did not time that.

I seem to always shoot low against the timer when cold and I have been rusty so that needs work until my cold shots are higher.
All the lower rounds were the first cylinder. There are three holes out of frame just outside the 7 ring.
I know its because I think time first instead of accuracy first when I start out. Need to consciously flip that. Work to do.

Been waffling on a new carry gun but, can't do that until I get back in shape with what I have. Hardware change may or may not help but, have to make sure the basic software is working properly before anything.

When you were gone I had to take nearly eight months off from my heavy class and training schedule. I stayed on dry fire, but when I went back to classes late last year I had noticeably lost skill, speed, accuracy.

I’m just now getting back to where I should be. I knew shooting is an incredibly perishable skill. I was still surprised how much work it took to get back and how important live fire is.

Always good to get a tune up.

I’ve simplified this thing for myself down to the essentials of where my standards need to be with a snub nose revolver;

1 Draw and make a face shot in less than a second at 3 yards. Pocket or AIWB

2 Draw from concealed (any position) and pass the 5x5.

3 Do 1&2 with strong hand only

4 Draw from concealment while performing dynamic movement and place a hit on the body from 5 yards.

5 Draw from concealment and place 2 shots on the body at 25 yards in 3 seconds.

I feel these are reasonable skills to maintain and within the scope of the design for the snub nose revolver.
So far I am able to maintain those levels with dry fire and infrequent live fire sessions.

I feel your pain. Had a similar experience a couple of days ago. I have a number of carry guns and couldn't manage to shoot any of them well enough to suit me ( after doing okay with them just a day or two before ). The sole exception was a snubbie 38 ( which is a gun I usually shoot less well than the others ). Go figure! Oh well, at least it wasn't a complete washout! Some days you eat the bear - some days the bear eats you 😁. I'll stick with the Snubbie until I get myself sorted out ( like it better for CCW anyway ).

I wouldn't complain too much with those hits. The low hits might not be optimal, but if one hits an artery, it will not go well for the thug. Or you might just take him out of the gene pool. >;~}

Haven't had the snub nose out in over a year. Can only imagine how rusty my performance will be when she comes back out this summer. Have been concentrating on working with a sub-compact 9mm as a primary CCW. That is a whole thread on it's own.

Those are good goals to try and get proficient with. That is actually a tough list and requires putting in the work. I am going back to some of those basics. I use the smaller silhouette targets (B 34) in my pic for those drills inside 15 yards and use an IDPA practice target for further out. I originally bought the IDPA targets for the wizard drill.
I figure if I can make good hits on the B34 I will be good to go on an actual sized person.
I have ordered a 12" x 20" steel torso target for those longer distances which will be a smaller target but, give me some feedback so I don't have to walk back and forth so much.
Thanks for the list of drills, I will use those.

While I try to keep those within the times listed, I’m not dogmatic about them.
Number 4 is probably the most difficult to do, but probably the most important, imo.

2 shots on the body at 25 yards is not that difficult, unless you restrict the shot placement to A Zone only hits, which I don’t because I feel that’s an unnecessary expectation, especially at that distance. I believe 2 hits on the body at that distance is going to definitely throw anyone off their game on the receiving end enough, allowing you to exercise other options.

The steel is nice for your intended objectives.
