Statement on Fort Hood Tragedy

Nov 6, 2009

Washington, DC - Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement about the tragedy at Fort Hood, Texas:

“Our deepest sympathies go to the families who lost loved ones or are today visiting them in the hospital. Along with the rest of the country, we wish the Fort Hood community a return to a secure and safe environment.

“When I heard of the tragedy yesterday, we were in the midst of planning a response to the latest dangerous legislative proposal from the gun lobby in the United States Senate - language to automatically restore access to guns to veterans designated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Justice Department as ‘mentally incapacitated’ or ‘mentally incompetent.’ In light of what happened yesterday - a violent attack by an emotionally unstable soldier - it is even clearer that the proposal being pushed by Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina should be rejected.

“America has seen an epidemic of horrific gun violence at churches and synagogues, workplaces, health clubs, high schools, universities, police stations and now Army bases. This latest tragedy, at a heavily fortified army base, ought to convince more Americans to reject the argument that the solution to gun violence is to arm more people with more guns in more places. Enough is enough.”

How about the Brady Campaign fighting to keep criminals in jail and fighting to use all the gun laws we already have.:ticking:

Every once and awhile I'll click on to this site to see which bills are on their radar.

Then I email my Senators and Rep. asking them not to support them.

Thanks Sara.

Luckily hardly anybody pays any serious attention to their stale diatribe. According to firearm polls taken of the general population.

NYC Mayor Bloomturd's city had some extra money for him to send spies into the Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Show venues/arenas, including ours at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio, and at Sharonville, Ohio. They used hidden cameras to catch a few fools selling guns to spies who blatantly told them that they probably could not pass background checks. Oooooooo. Bill Goodman's responded by offering free table and booth spaces to the AFT and FBI, letting them set up cardboard warning posters with signs and rules of regulation and warning. The next time we go to these shows, we are going to loudly and often tell Mayor Bloomturd's spies that they ought to stay out of our damned business and gun shows. I thought that they were broke in New York City.

Fort Hood Killer Reportedly Chose "Cop Killer" Handgun
Nov 6, 2009

Washington, DC - Four and a half years ago, three police organizations in the United States issued advisories to warn officers that a new handgun introduced into the U.S. market by a Belgium manufacturer of military firearms represented a unique threat to the safety of police officers.

It was a handgun that was designed to fire bullets through body armor. A U.S. Senator and a U.S. Congressman urged a legal ban on civilian possession of the firearm, which began being referred to as the "cop killer gun." The gun, manufactured by FN Herstal of Belgium, is lightweight and easily concealable, and was designed as a military sidearm to complement military rifles made by the same company. One law enforcement expert referred to the Five-Seven as "an assault rifle that fits in your pocket."

While no police officer has reportedly been killed by a suspect armed with a Five-Seven, it may now have taken the lives of U.S. soldiers. Today, several news sources are reporting that it was the Five-Seven that Nidal M. Hasan used in his shooting attack at Fort Hood in Texas Thursday

In January 2005, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), released their alert to the police community at a press conference, joined by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Elliott Engel of New York.

When first launched for civilian sales, company officials wrote on the company website that “enemy personnel, even wearing body armor can be effectively engaged up to 200 meters. Kevlar® helmets and vests as well as the CRISAT protection will be penetrated.” That language has since been removed by FN Herstal.

In early 2005, Brady Campaign staff purchased the weapon at a Virginia gun dealer and test-fired it. The bullets successfully penetrated a police Kevlar vest.

Well, with the correct ammo, of course it can. Did he purchase the AP rounds through legal channels?

I doubt it. There are no legal channels to buy AP ammo for handguns.

It is limited to Police and Military, and I dont know of any police that use it in handguns. If you need AP, you need to be shooting it from a rifle, not a handgun.

Most people are smart enough to know this.

Any handgun is capable of firing AP as is any rifle. No news there.

My dad got one a while back, and he loves shooting it at the range. Of course being retired, and having lots of money makes it possible for him....:hand5: We poor folk have to stick to the 9mm for now anyway. :22a:

“Dangerous legislation that would have forced states to allow dangerous individuals to carry loaded guns in public was defeated in the U.S. Senate ...”
I wonder how those people think … if they think at all. It can not be possible that they mean all crap they say. Do they perhaps believe that criminals care about the law when they get or carry a firearm?:grrr:

No, we aren't. They are, though. And so are millions of "normal" and otherwise intelligent people.

IF, and that's a bloody big "if," it were possible to completely eliminate a device from planet Earth, then perhaps we could have a substantive discussion about what to do in the absence of such items. However, that's simply impossible to achieve. It's pointless to even pray for such a thing, 'cause it won't happen. And, in this country of free persons in free states, it's a Constitutionally protected right of the People to be armed and carry those arms. Beyond that, in the criminal community, few criminals are going to ever pay attention to the bleating of a few legislators in the capitols.

So. The only thing worth debating is: what to do when criminals have citizens out-armed 100:1? The only rational answer is, since criminals won't be disarmed, to fully arm citizens to the gills. Do that, and we'll have a prayer at stopping crime against upstanding citizens. Yes, we'll get a slight uptick in new crimes, via a few thousand newly-empowered idiots. But, we'll get a huge down-tick in crime and repeat crime, due to the simple fact that citizens will stop much of what's attempted against them, and a good percentage of criminals will simply decide it's dangerous out there.

Anything short of that will remain wishful thinking that we live in a pixie-dust world.
