What do you guys think of the Bushmaster AR-15 ?

Does $1250 seems reasonable (no accessories, 2 mags) ?

Thanks

Have a bushmaster..... had to make some tweeks on it, but it's a fine weapon.... not sure $1200 is reasonable though......
Check here as well....

I like the price of the CMMG, but those are the thin barrel and I don't recommend those. Go with the heavy barrel at least........

Most ARs are manufactured with a choice of three barrel diameters.... usually depends on the manufacturer as to the model of each one....
I don't remember the three precise sizes.....
There is a thin barrel, a heavy barrel and a bull barrel. (as refered to by most gunsmiths)

The thin barrel is usually turned down in a cpl places and most always has a 203 mount cut in the barrel. It will taper up to the size of the flash supessor. I'm not sure of the diam.

Heavy is .735?, with no 203 mounts cut in the barrel, you can usually tell a heavy barrel because it will be the same size as the diam. of the flash suppressor. No thin cut down areas the entire length of the barrel.

Last is the bull barrel at a full .935 ?? diam. Also will have no cut down areas the lenght of the barrel.

I found the profiles of the barrels...... and while they list a feather weight, and a light weight barrel, they are not commenly used by manufactures. Only the "gov" spec'ed barrel with the 203 mounts, the heavy barrel, and the bull barrel are the most common platforms for the AR. I personally don't like the smaller barrels that have the 203 mounts because its where the barrel overheats first....in the thin areas......

If you can wait a few weeks Spikes Tactical has some new billet lowers that they just got BATFE approval on. You can order complete rifles or you can mix-n-match your parts. I think you can get a fully pimped out rifle (gas impingement) with a billet lower for that price and have a much nicer rifle than a Bushy. Spikes Tactical makes great stuff and has the best customer service in the industry. Tom the CEO will answer any of your questions if you call. I wouldn't even consider buying any other brand than Spikes.

You can see the new billet lowers and the newest billet upper here. I believe these will be available for order within the next 3-4 weeks.

I'm glad you found that last link. You are aware that the barrel profile you referenced is a government profile (or patterned after the same), right? Not unlike the one on the M4 and M16?

Anyway, why do you recommend against lightweight barrels?

I have a Bushmaster with the heavy barrel A3. I was told that the heavy barrel is more accurate. I picked mine up 6 months ago for 950 through my FFL. Your price seems high. Also, remember you will end up spending more than the price on accessories, I guarantee it. Once you start shoppong for goodies you can't quit. I recommend you get the A3 version so you can remove the carry handle for optics and sights.

@ BAC......

Yea, it's the Gov. barrel, my I (and my smiths) refer to ANY AR that has the smaller barrel as a thin barrel, simply because it has the same diam. in the cut down portions as the lightweight barrel (see SGBs AR? The barrel is smaller than the flash suppressor. A Lightweight barrel.) This makes the barrel only as strong as it's thinnest part. Now in my experience in the military, and outside as well, this is a weak spot for the AR platform. Yea the lightweight barrels are lighter, but they overheat faster. Same as a "govt" barrel w/ the 203 notches. It's where the barrel will fail first. This is why I always recommend the heavy or (my fav) the bull barrel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with shooting a lightweight barrel, it's just not what I want, nor recommend to a serious shooter.

This IS of course….. MHO as always! :yup:

Interesting. And yet Bravo Co., Daniel Defense, and others who market more towards the heavier shooting community are all coming out with or already offer lightweight barrels (at customers' requests). Both ADCO and MSTN regularly turn down (make thinner) barrels for customers. G&R Tactical took a poll for who would buy custom uppers with lightweight Colt barrels and there was quite a lot of interest. This may be a good read.

For what it's worth, Army shoot-to-destruction tests did not show barrel failures at the 203 notch on gov't profile barrels (the file is too big for an in-post attachment, I can email it to you if you want). I think all failure points were under the handguards, but I haven't read it in a while.
