I posted this well over a year ago on THR but thought I'd post it here - having been very aware of things visual of late - eyesight matters in general.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Was again today, whilst sitting eating out - trying to excercize and practice better use of peripheral vision. I have done this a long time now.
It has long struck me that we often under-use this facility .. and whilst my old eyes are not as good as once - fortunately my peripheral seems every bit up to scratch.
I find that concentration on what is in that field of view (often close to 90º to side) ... enables me to collect a lot of useful info. Movement of course is the one thing that peripheral does well ... but with practice it does seem that extra info can be gleaned .. for instance ... whether a human form is male/female ... size and weight etc. .... and what they are doing.
I expect most people use their peripheral vision automatically and unconsciously .. but I have found that practiced conscious attention to what is seen can and does yield even more than might first be thought. Coupled with that too is using full movement of eyes to sides to reduce head turning activity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So - just presenting this as yet another thing we can IMO usefully cultivate. The desirable avoidance of any conflict is, as we probably all agree, down to awareness - and often that wants to be subtle but efficient. Including also - use of shades and/or looking at something with head turned elsewhere. ''Low key'' observation if you will.

I think it's just because we all read that and said "Yep."

The trick to awareness seems to be to be focused and completely unfocused all at once. To see nothing and see everything.

It's how a warehouse manager notices the one box on the shelf with 500 other boxes that's out of place.

It's how you look at a room of 28 students and notice the one listening to their CD player under their hood.

It's how you look at a case full of used guns and pull out the one hidden on the bottom shelf that's actually a good deal.

It's seeing what's to your extreme left or right and what's right in front of you.

:rolleyes: :biggrin: Got that one - right up your street eh!

I guess I was really (as ever) trawling for input - never feeling that what I ''think'' I know is complete. Big bonus of places like this is that, despite my geriatric status - I can still learn and am always thirsty for other's experience. Thx Euc! :smile: You kept an old man (Phart?) happy! :tongue:

Well, like you, my peripheral vision is probably the best I've got. I consistantly check out good when they run that little orbital peripheral vision test at my annual eye exam. And Euc is correct, I read that post and said, "Yup, I agree with that". Don't anyone feel rejected when someone doesn't immediately answer a post. The number of threads / number of posts have doubled in the last few days. It takes me two or three settings woven around family visits, dinner and a couple of programs of the Military Channel to get through all of the posts. And then, some of them I have to "think on a while"..... :wink:

Did you mean perrifferal - or was that priffrelle - nope - had to be periphral. Nope - try again - pee-riff-er-all. There .....

haha

Actually, this is a really good thread.
Not too many people responding to it...but GOOD! ~ none the less.
You know I noticed a few months ago when I was goofing around indoors researching some really odd/strange new point shooting technique that my peripheral vision extends back a degree or two with contact lenses in.
That's weird! Might have something to do with more lens material further out on the surface of the eyeball. I have no idea except to say that it's true.

By the Way....My vision is better than perfect close~up & right out past my front sight.
Things begin to get very slightly blurry (for me) out at around 7 to 10'
But, when I work close...I am CONSTANTLY taking my glasses off because I don't need them.
It drives me bonkers!
I am the perfect candidate for laser eye surgery...too bad I'm afraid of a "botch job" & going totally blind. :eek:
I'm not letting anybody zap my eyes with laser beams...nope...Sorry!

Oh the laser - QK - I am an unmitigated and self-confessed ''laserphobe'' also. I too am appalled at the thought of a botched job.

I almost wish tho I had your myopic trend as then I'd see my sights! I am the opposite.

Your thinking re peripheral and contacts - I think you are correct - that extra protrusion to front does very probably gather in that extra degree or two.

I too, read at first glance and said "Yup", right on with perf vis ( perf is short for perifial...perferial....you know)....along with the perf comes sensing your unfocused "hearing" too....unfortunately I have tineyetus...tunitis....tinittis....geessh...ringing in the ears so bad, that I don't always hear before I see.

QK & P95 ...don't give up on thought of Lasik....I did it 7 yrs ago and would do it again in a heartbeat...the technology has come a long when since then and they can get you corrected to a eagle's eye. The procedure is really safe, absolutely no pain, and is very quick. The rewards are priceless. I'm considering the crystall lens replacement sometime in the future...that gets rid of the reading glasses and you'll never get catracks...caturacks...cater...those blobs in your eyes! :tongue:

Prospector - agreed - I do know the proceedures have improved a lot. I guess tho - having worn glasses now some 42 years - they are part of my anatomy and I can go with that. Much of my correction is axial too and I wonder whether that would be as ''treatable''. (must be my outa shape cranium - too many blunt traumas when a young varmint! :biggrin: ).

So - will probably stick to glasses and manage - not to mention my miserly disinclination to spend a large sum - other than on another gun! :rolleyes: :wink:
