This is exact reason why I (and so many others) have been advocating body camera use by police. Additionally, legislation was recently passed that required release of video within 60 days - another great move.

I truly believe videos like this will help both the police and the public. This video clearly shows absolute lack of training (or discipline) on the part of the LEO doing the shooting. He's launching rounds all over the place, including in the direction of fellow officers. This should be included in officer training of what NOT to do. I also believe it shows ALL of us what NOT to do.

Please, let's not disparage the police, they have a tough job, only made tougher by all the thugs in Chicago.

Peace

I hate to say it, but it does not look good to me. I will wait for more information that the video may not have captured.

Not an armed good guy vs bad guy story - moved to LE.

Tragic. I might also recommend avoiding police problems by avoiding stealing cars and also stopping for police when ordered to do so. The life you save may be your own. Just sayin'.

Oh, that goes without saying. I simply thought this was a good (though tragic) incident to show the value of body cameras, and how easy it may be to lose firing discipline.

It would be wonderful if everyone obeyed the law all the time, but we know that ain't gonna happen.

I got your meaning and your point is clearly one well taken and not one to be lightly dismissed. My whole career in law enforcement has been pockmarked with guys just itching to use their Taser or gun like a new toy. The military is full of guys like that too. And they are held accountable. So should the police. But what gripes my behind is all these "victims" portrayed as being oh-so innocent. Sure.

Yeah. Let's not disparage police when time and time again they "appear to" be shown guilty of carelessness at a minimum and possibly even murder, yet are let off scott free when you and I would get prison.

Hold on guys, we aren't LEO's, we wouldn't understand. Even though he used poor judgement, and put other officers, and possibly residents lives at risk, we dont know that he necessarily intended to. After all, he was in fear of his life.

Chicago is already nearing 2300 homicides for 2016 and we're only half way thru the year. ABC World News recently said that it's more dangerous there than in Iraq. Somehow there has to be a way to remedy this problem. But with the crime stats what they are I can't imagine being a LEO there and not being on edge all the time.

I dont know everything, but I do know this much, as long as Rham Emmanuel is mayor, nothing will change.

Well before an intelligent response can be made there's an abundance of other video from other officers and dash cams to look at and even then it's going to be difficult to see the entire story.

The clip in the OP is about 40 seconds of information. There are at least 3 full length unedited (6 to 10+ minutes each) body cam videos and additional dash cam video to see multiple perspectives available on line now.
What amazes me is there is no way that kid hasn't played GTA. Anyone who has played GTA knows when there's that many cops on your tail you're gonna get shot.

I'm sorry, and I'm not even going to bother looking it up, but that figure is outrageous and impossible. However many homicides there have been, probably 300-400, are still a lot, but 2300? That's like 1 in 10,000 murdered in 7 months.

I didn't even catch that when I read it, but according to the FBI on their crime stats page, in 2013 there were 414 murders. I think anywhere between 2-300 so far this year is a safe bet.
According to the Tribune, 385 homicides so far in 2016, and over 2100 shootings.
No where near 2,300 homicides for the year.....

371 YTD according to heyjackass.com.

About 2,300 SHOOTINGS so far.

You left off the sarcasm brackets.

So a serious look at why there is mistrust. The officer plays to the audience and says, "he was shooting at us right?"
When we see video evidence of officers having a suspect clearly outnumbered and incapacitated, but continue to shout "stop resisting!" When the first words are CYA, we loose faith in the watchers.

The time to shoot was when the felon was ramming cars. This wasn't a good kid. It might not be a good shoot. Butthere is no reason to bolster your defense with lies you know will be played at your trial.

I was just commenting to someone today about the differences between:
Shooting: gunshots fired (people were likely injured, if it made the news), but no one died!
Homicide: someone died. Accidently or intentionally, a life was lost. Firearm NOT required!
Murder: someone went looking to end a life. Maybe not the one they intended, but went prepared to end someone's life.

2300 shootings, so far in Chicago. Not hard to believe. 2300 victims (more than one per shooting) more likely still.
2300 homicides, tough sell, but it could happen. Especially, if including non-firearm deaths (at the hands of another).

Not that today's "freelance journalists" would know the differences.
