I was wondering what steps I need to go through to be able to purchase class 3 weapons legally? I am an active law enforcement officer so I assume that helps. Thanks everyone. I am new to this site

What kind? SBR,SBS,FA,DD,AOW ,SILENCER ???

You either go Trust or Corp (like trust ) or normal as a person form to do this ..All this methods now need fingerprints and either CLEO least notification if trust

Oh and PS for NFA act stuff money and a lot will help with some SBS and SBR and AOW are not that pricy just really the cost of the upper or cutting it down and the stamp ..Cans are from a 100 bucks to 1k or more ,, DD again 1k for a 40mm to 100k for a cannon or something like that .. FA starts at about 8-10 for a basic sub gun maybe a ac556 at 11k up to 60k or more for belt feed or a auto cannon

And yes FA is very fun as are cans ...But as a cop 10-1 you have FA m16 in your invertory you could see about legally useing if you just have the itch to shoot a FA at the range

Being a cop would only help if the CLEO likes you and will sign off easier ..Hint that is rare
There have been recent changes such that you only need to inform the CLEO that you are submitting an application. You do not need their approval. The downside is that you can no longer submit paperwork solely as a trust. You can still have the weapon assigned to the trust, but the application has to be submitted from the trust 'responsible person'.

Ah yes forget that part ..
Do you want to do it as an LEO?

If that is the case, you can transfer directly to your Dept. without the paying the 200 tax by using a Form 5 for "government entities. The only problem with that is that the item technically becomes property of the Dept in which you are employed. Although you can have the Class 3 item issued to you for the duration, once you leave it stays with the Dept.

If you want to do it as a civilian, you'll have to do it with a Form 4 and pay the 200 tax. If its an MG, it must be made before 1986 otherwise you are not eligible. Pr-86 guns can be very expensive due to supply and demand. An example would be a select fire M-16 which would be in the 16-20K range.

You can buy a suppressor tax free or you can just pay the stamp. I've done it both ways. Some cops prefer to pay the tax so that wherever they go they can take their stuff with them since they own it.
Others go the tax free route and are OK with that as long as they stay employed at the same place. I got into one deal where a couple of cops went the tax free route, and when they decided to go elsewhere they filled out a F-4 payed the tax and eventually got the can or SBR that was issued to them.

Normally the process is like this:

You buy the suppressor/sbr/sbs or mg..
the dealer fills out the paperwork (F4)
You fill out 2 sets of fingerprints,
provide 2ea. 2x2" photos
sign a form saying that you are a US Citizen
Send it all to the BATFE along with a check for 200.00

And then wait and wait and wait.

Right now Forms are taking about 7 months to get approved.

When it does, it goes to the dealer.

He calls you up and tells you to come get it.

Then you fill out a 4473, although no background check is required because it has already been done. You fill it out, receive your stuff and then go home and play with it.

The fact that you are an LEO will not matter at all.

Cool, HotGuns!

Just curious - With the VFG that close to the muzzle, any issues with flash burns to the fingers? Seems like it would at least sting a little!
