Concealed carry restrictions....Getting rid of them....

Just thinking to myself today. My state is pretty good in regards to concealed carry. Not ideal, of course. I would love to have Vermont/Alaska type carry. But, other than that, pretty darn good. The only places I can't carry by state law are jails and courthouses. Bars, churches, you name it, I'm able to carry. No requirement to notify LEOs(though I would, as a courtesy), and the permit is good for four years. The training requirement is small, and not hard to satisfy.
Other than the aforementioned Vermont style carry, what one thing would you change about your state carry permit?
The two things that bug me are the lack of reciprocity and the requirement to carry the permit itself.
As far as reciprocity goes, I can get around that with any number of out of state permits. So, I guess my pick goes to the requirement that I keep the permit on my person when carrying. If I am cought carrying without it on my person, it's a felony. Even though it shows up in the database when my name is run. If it was a misdemeanor, not so bad. But a felony? I'm constantly worried I'll lose it, and be gunless until my new permit arrives in the mail. And it's one more thing to bulk up my wallet, and remember to transfer to a secure place when bicycling/swimming/running/etc.
What would you change?

Well, If I was King for a day  , I would get rid of the "no weapons" policy on Military Installations (since I spend the majority of my waking hours there, or in transit).
But, if I can only change a state requirement (Florida), I think I would allow concealed carry in bars.
I don't spend much time in courthouses or schools.
Hey Fjol'

I am quite fortunate - in PA no training required ( tho I do wish some folks would - to make sure they are in good shape, legally and skill-wise).

I am barred from courthouses and schools and Fed property of course but overall - most of time I carry 16/7 no hassles - way I like it.

My son is getting his CCW and sad to say his work bans guns from inside - tho OK in parking lot (small plus I suppose).

Bottom line - all places should be available for carry - by ''clean'' citizens - who are not a risk to society. If caught with excess alcohol then they are screwed - if inappropriate use of firearm - they are screwed. It is all down to responsible ownership and lifestyle.

I only have my home CCW and FL - so while good for many not OK for some. I wish to heck MD and IL for example would get their act together. And CA is in part just trashing the 2A - so is NYC and Chicago.

I always carry my permits - always. I wish for total reciprocity in all states and I do not mean just lower 48, tho anyways AK is sensible but HI needs a refresh!!

A lot of the things that were really really bad my TSRA membership has help payed to address.

I'd like to get rid of some of the really arbitrary and stupid stipulations we have, like the idea that it matters what kind of gun you qualify with.

In a more pressing matter, I'd like it to be made clear that employers have to obey the state law with regards to firearms locked in vehicles in company parking lots.
I'm all for the 'good guys' with permits being allowed to carry anywhere without restriction, but in today's PC world, that will never happen.

I don't have a problem with not being able to carry in a bar, that's kind of like drinking and driving, the two don't mix very well at times.

I would like to see the restriction about not being able to carry on any school property change. Not that I am advocating carrying inside a school, but I frequently attend sporting events at high schools and colleges. I would not like to be inside one of those events and have something happen while I am unarmed.
I'd like for it to be legal to carry at a school event off of a school campus as well.

I'd also like to work in a stipulation that if you have a CHL and a valid teaching certificate, you can carry on school property even if it was some limited way, just to help get things moving in the right direction.
Though not a state permit issue, being unable to carry on a military base is a real thorn in my side as well...especially because it prevents me from having a weapon in my vehicle for the entire day.

Public gatherings...concerts, sporting events, etc...should not be carry-prohibited.

I can accept restrictions for courthouses, prisons and police stations...but there should be gun lockers available for the public like there are for LEO's.

Bars...I'm undecided on that one.
Maybe we haven't evolved enough yet...

Schools...I'm biased...my wife teaches high school english.
While I think it should be allowed, I know a lot of teachers that could qualify but I'd be scared to think they were armed...so it boils down to where and how do we draw the "some should and some shouldn't" line...and who makes that call??

I'm not 100% saying I would but here's the thing... It's the principle of the argument at hand.

I'm quite sick and tired of society telling me what I am and am not capable of deciding for myself just because I'm a member of the education profession. I'm quite sick of being treated like disposable human garbage by the state legislature.

Our great Republican governor didn't even bother to send a representative to the No Texas Teacher Left Behind Forum some time ago. That's what Rick Perry thinks of me. He thinks I'm not worth his time.

I am 24 years old. I am managing a very difficult adult situation right now with my father's recent passing, I work, I pay bills, and I can smoke and drink as much as I want to. I'm tired of being treated like a moron who doesn't know his own subject that he teaches, and I'm tired of the attitude that I can't decide for myself when and how to be armed or not armed.

Honestly, what the heck do people think I'm going to do? Shoot a student? You think that the people who teach your children refrain from hurting them merely because they don't have legal access to firearms?

You trust your precious children with people whom you believe would kill them?

I'm the same person regardless of whether or not I am armed. I want the dignity of being able to make my own decision, whatever it may be.

Well for one thing I am in Ohio a lot, and I would like to see their stupid car carry restrictions lifted.

If I were king for a day?

One thing I would do aside from all the stuff already mentioned. Setup a system where anyone willing to go through a background check and some leo like training would have the same status as federal agents with regard to carry. In short, no place off limits, even schools etc. The other thing I would like to see, is employers forced to allow carry.

Once again it will not happen any time soon if ever, but we can dream can't we?
One thing for a fact...

I have qualified dozens of Teachers for CCW permits. We have discussed this subject at length. So far, every one that has a permit would carry in school grounds if it were legal and at the very least keep one in a locked car.

I am reminded of the teacher in Jonesboro, Arkansas that died in a school shooting. It was never covered in the news media much, other than the fact that she was killed. What they didnt say was how.

She was sitting on the ground with a student that had been shot, she had his head in her lap. As bullets were hitting the ground around them both, she turned and shielded that students body with her own. Unfortunatley, she was struck and killed. That student likely owes that teacher his life.

As it stands now, all we have done is GUARANTEED that our schools are target rich environments. If each school in this country had just a few teachers with the gumption that the one in Jonesboro had and they had access to guns, school shootings would be a thing of the past.

My wife has been teaching for 28 years and she loves her job and her students. In the event of a shooting scenario, I would like to think that she at least had a fighting chance.

I'm not insinuating that its a perfect solution, but it would be better than the huddling up in the corner if a shooter did walk into class...

You're awfully young to be so burned out on teaching already...
I'm not being facetious or condescending...my wife is 52 and I'm very involved and aware of her teaching environment because we've been married for 25 years and that's how our relationship is.

It's the worst example of a noble profession beaten down by an intractible bureaucracy...so I understand your frustrations completely.

Please understand the context of my statement...
teachers are just a group of people to me...some I would trust with my life, others I'd run the other way if I thought they were armed.
I wouldn't want to see a special dispensation for arming teachers, nor would I want stricter restrictions.

It's simply a scenario that I am close to and I commented on my own observations.

I've probably already addressed more of your other concerns than I should have considering the topic of this thread...another thread, or maybe even another forum would probably be better for the important and valid points you made.

I wish your wish would come true! (Although I still couldn't carry to work, federal agency!)
I think there should be no school restrictions for any teacher with a permit. The powers that be are stupid if they think the punks of Columbine, Jonesboro, or any of the other slaughter grounds gave or will give a crap about such a law, except to know it's open-season in the hallowed hallways!

I envision the outcome could have been far different if permitted teachers had the opportunity (read right) to defend themselves and those in their care, instead of hiding under desks praying that LEOs get there in time.
I would like to see ALL restrictions go away. IF we're good enough to have a carry permit, then we should be good enough to carry anywhere.

I mean what, we can only be trusted in SOME places, but not others?? That is total BS.

If I can pass a background check, and my state says I can carry a concealed pistol, then that should be enough.

I don't see why I can't carry in a bar. Suppose my friends want to get together after work. Either I don't drink, limit my drinking, or I put the gun in the trunk. Michigan has a BAC limit of .02, that works out to about 1 to 2 beers an hour for me. Frankly, I doubt I'd drink more than one beer, as I've just about quit drinking alcohol except when I'm at home.

And the restriction on schools is ludicrous. The only people who will obey that law are the law-abiding citizens. IF some maniac wanted to go into my sons school and start shooting it up, I'd have to run out to my car to get my gun to even have a chance to stop him.

Same goes for just about any other place. It's just plain stupid.

I'd get rid of needing permits, and I'd overturn all of the illegal firearms bans over the years, i.e. the machine gun ban in the 30s, the 1968 legislation, etc.

I'd also force all states and cities to abide by the Bill of Rights.

That would be nice. But I think our best bet would be to get rid of the pistol free zones first, then work on getting rid of the need for permits. As it is, I doubt if this is something we'll see in my life time.
lower cost of getting the permit would be nice, since it is suppose to be a right. Also the gun free zones could be tossed out, especially for teachers. Rifle/shotgun carry in vehicle passenger compartment would be nice too. I don't think MI is all that bad though.

There are states with worse laws than Michigan...like Ohio.
Other than the aforementioned Vermont style carry, what one thing would you change about your state carry permit?
Well, I'd like to be able to legally carry into restaurants that serve alcohol. It's a personal responsibility thing, and I don't drink. I'd like to be able to legally carry everywhere.
the restrictions on using batons and more potent pepper spray could be lifted as well. Luckily we can carrry in restaurants that serve.
