This happened about a month ago, yet I just joined this site.. Here goes.

I was feeling under the weather on a friday night, and my wife had gone to her parent's house to visit with her sister, who lives in detroit. I had a fever (103.1) and was laying in bed unable to sleep, watching southpark.

I hear footsteps coming up the stairs to my 2nd floor apartment and figure hey! Wife is home! But for some reason my spider senses perked. She didn't call or text that she was leaving to give me a heads-up (something we do for eachother in case it takes a long time, that way flags can be raised). So, I grabbed my Glock 23 (nearest weapon) with my M3X tactical light attached (I use it when things go bump in the night (which has never happened until now)). It was 12:45pm, so I figured why not.

Stupidly, I didn't look through the peep-hole, because I had lived at this apt for 4 months, and the only person that had ever knocked on my door was the mail-man with a package. I just assumed it was her, and didn't listen to my gut. Duhhh. Anyways, I turned the knob after unlocking the dead-bolt and thought, what-if? So I barely cracked the door open and peeked.

Outside my door stood 2 males, aged 24-28yrs, with a large black lab, on a leash. They stood about 6'1 and maybe 5'10. I'm 6'1 myself, and weigh around 190. Since I'm in the army, I consider myself a somewhat tough customer, having gone through many combattives training courses, and a knife fighting class in germany.

When I cracked the door, one pushed it open further, then they stood there looking at me. My G23 was at my side, and i was turned at 90 degrees so they couldnt see it. I said 'can I help you guys?'

They looked at me, slightly swaying, obviously drunk, and responded 'got any pot?' I was taken back.. I had done pot in my past, but not for years. I wasn't about to explain my occupation, and the dangers of drugs, so I simply responded 'no.. anything else?' They motioned over their shoulders to their buddies behind them, standing on the stairs. They looked gang affiliated, and annoyed that i had blown off the question. then they said 'well can we borrow some money?' I said 'no, i dont even know who you are..'
Thats when things turned bad. one of the guys tried to push past me, so i shoulder checked him back onto the doormat and said, EXCUSE ME?! His buddy then took a step INTO the doorway and said 'what is your problem?

I took a step back, revealing my G23, and stated in a firm voice, 'I dont know who you are, and I think it's time for you to leave'.
They looked stunned, and walked away from the door. I slammed it.

I ran to the bedroom (with a view of the parking lot) and watched them. They were talking and using harsh hand motions. Of COURSE right then my wife texts me saying shes 2 mins out. I texted her back saying DONT pull into the parking spot (marked for each apartment, they would be able to tell, and they were right next to her space). She didn't get the text and pulled right up. I, without thinking, walked outside, and downstairs with my G23 at the low ready and said, 'Leave. Now. The cops are on the way." then escorted my wife into the apartment, not turning my back.

I got my camera and put it on video mode, and had my wife record them by our car. Surprisingly they didn't do damage to the car, or anyhting. They talked, and left. It's been a month, and I havent heard or seen them since.

I was glad my gut told me something. I was glad nobody got hurt. I was glad they weren't armed. In retrospect I would have done a lot differently, but I cannot deny the fact that everything worked out beautifully. Since then, my wife and i have developed a knock sequence, set places for the weapons in the house, video monitoring for the door and the parking space, and a shiny new car alarm for her car and my jeep. I will NOT be caught off guard again.

Any Thoughts?? I'll take criticism and praise both. What would you have done? I was extremely confused by the request for drugs, and thought that i would be invaded, robbed, assaulted, or all three.

Other then opening the door and not calling 911 you did great. Just the sight of a gun in a situation of this type can defuse the problem in a hurry.

I should have slammed it shut and called. I tried to keep the weapon a secret until i felt there was no other safe option. There wasn't even a round chambered (i sometimes wake up with night terrors, and dont want to fire off a round in a panic). But they didn't know that.

You never know when you will need protection, and what could you have done when your wife drove up in the midst of that unruly crowd with out your firearm?

You called it your spider senses, I would call it my 6th senses but whatever you call it when it kicks in I have learned to go on alert and get ready.

I am glad things worked out as well as it did.

That's just flat-out freaky, sh3llsh0ck.

What you've described is the weak-link in my home protection plan (I'll spare you the details). I still don't have a good solution, but thank you for the urgent reminder...

If you didn't, I wish you had reported the matter to the police. If for no other reason it would give you some record of having previously reported problems, just in case these goblins ever return and you do have to drop a couple of them.

That confrontation could have gone 'south' real quick. Being prepared :comeandgetsome: made the difference.
Next time don't answer the door.:gah:

If he would have tried that here in TX he would be a swiss cheese candidate.
It's still not too late to report them with video,it might solve a few crimes around there

All went well but next time after you are awake and walking up the stairs why not rack the slide in case somebody tries to push their way in again, you would be ready.

Welcome to DC.com.

You survived and by your own reporting have recognized areas of weakness to learn lessons.
Good stuff and thank you for sharing so that others might learn as well, by proxy.

You mention that you have video monitoring of your door and parking place. I too live in an apartment and have been looking for some sort of video setup that I can use for the same reasons. Since it's an apartment, I can't go around drilling holes for wires and cameras. Do you or anyone else here have a suggestion?

I think you did good. I would, though, be sure and use the peephole every time and keep a round in that chamber. If he would have pulled a gun on you, you would have been in trouble. All in all, though, ya done good. Always call the police after something like that happens....

I spent a little extra money and got a Wireless Networked Video camera with pan/scan/zoom + motion following.. Its nice because i can check on the area from work by connecting to my home network. Newegg.com has some cams you can look at.

Honestly, I think you got very lucky. That's a good thing though, because it's helped you realize the things you need to change. This could have ended very badly, especially with your wife not getting your text in time.

One thing, how many total were there? You mentioned 2 at your door, and some of their buddies behind them on the doorstep.

Glad you're able to post this, and that everything is alright with you and your wife.
