Found several dozen boxes of .45 and turned them down

Was down in OKC this weekend for a wedding and staying with my parents. My dad and I decided to drive around and look for ammo. We went by a couple pawn shops that didn't have any, then to Gun World in Del City. While waiting outside I spotted another patron carrying what I think was a Walther PPQ in his pocket. No holster. Waited until the place opened at 9:15; they were supposed to open at 9. Got inside and spied several 50-round boxes of .45. Asked the guy how much. $50 a piece. "Are those 100-round boxes?" "50" Turned to my dad and we walked out.

I don't care how hard it is to find, I'm not paying that. We went to a military surplus store and found .45 for $35/50. Still pretty pricey, but I picked up a couple. Dad found a box of 50 9mm for their PPQ at another pawn shop we went to for $32, and supposedly the guy is getting 30 boxes in today. He's going to reserve a few for us, and my dad will pick up a couple for them and a couple for my wife's Kahr CW9.

One of my students this past Saturday paid $50 for a box of 50rds of .380....

.
Yeesh. And I should point out that this was just regular ball ammo. According to the guy at the pawn/gun shop where my dad found the 9mm, he had a customer come in within the last couple weeks who had been to Gun World right before and paid $65 for a box of .40 JHP.
Wow. I was about to recommend just using ball ammo for your defensive round (230gr 45 ACP packs a lot of goodness just as it is).

That is nuts.
Makes you wonder if prices will go back down to "normal", even when supply increases. People have shown they're willing to pay these grossly inflated prices.

Good for you in turning them down. I'd have done likewise.
I saw a box of PDx1 on Gunbroker last week for $100. I was shocked! Sadly, someone was willing to pay it. It sold rather quickly.

Wow! And I thought prices here were bad. This weekend a friend and I picked up Blazer, 9MM FMJ (limited to 2 - 50 round boxes) and Blazer, .45 FMJ (no limit 50 round box) for $16.50 and $23.50 respectively. I don't like the aluminum casings but they're okay for punching holes in paper.
I'm glad that in the several weeks just before the shortage hit, I bought several hundred rounds of .45 ACP at Wally-World. $30/100 for FMJ and $40/100 for JHP. Wish I'd gotten more.
Gunbroker.com had a box of WWB, 100 rounds of FMJ 9mm for $99 - today. Just ridiculous.

Back to normal? Like gasoline?

We blew it when guys decided to hang their own kind by charging 90 bucks for an M&P magazine, or 75 bucks for a Glock 17 magazine. And if that wasn't bad enough, we blew it again when folks paid those prices. Things may simmer down, but we have proven that we will pay, out of a vein if need be. Heck, I'm just as foolish. Paid 80 bucks for a pair of M&P 9c mags last month.

The sad part is that many would say this is a good deal. Should have been 60 bucks.
i found a lgs with a few glock mags. ive bought 2 so far and gona go back tomaro first thing in the morning and buy a 23 mag for 35$ a 21 mag for 31 and maybe another 23 mag. they only have a few left but so far ive been the only one buying the glock mags. i also picked up two 30 round used ar mags for 25$ each for my g.f uncle he paid me back and they have more ar ammo and mags. also have 40 and 45 target and sd ammo. 40 cal target ammo is 24 a box of fifty for independence and federal. not to crazy of prices their good people.
Im shooting 40 and starting last week everything im getting is FMJ. I want to stock ammo and stocking JHP is just flat out to much cash at the rate I want to get it. I have enough speer jhp golddots for SD and honestly FMJ will get the job done so thats where its at for a while.
I was in Gun World a little over a month ago looking for 22 plinking rounds, I also walked out. The manager lacked any customer skills, I won't go back.
I got a message Heartland gun range in Edmond had a fresh shipment of 9mm, limit to 500 rounds per day per person. USA made, but don't remember off brand, light load 85 grain copper coated lead. Looked like the lead was spray painted, $25/box of 50. Guys were buying, but I wasn't sure I wanted to run them through any of my guns, so I left them for the other buyers. Before the scare, I was buying 100 round WWB at WalMart for $21-$23/box.
.45 is wayyy cheaper to shoot right now compared to 9mm and/or 223/5.56 guns. I get boxes of 50 for $25 bucks from my local gun range, or academy. Just gotta get there in the morning and wait in line for 10-15 mins on a saturday before they open.

I dunno, I don't think prices will stay at the current levels forever. Panic buyers are paying these prices but they won't be buying for long. People that aren't really into guns and just buying "in case" will either get tired of it and turn to the next fad/crisis or get what they consider to be "enough" and quit buying. I don't think there are enough "regular" gun owners willing and able to pay $1/round for ball ammo indefinitely. Where I live prices are already starting to fall a bit and even Evil Black Rifles are beginning to return to the stores.

WOW....I paid $20 per 50R last Friday for 150R of 380. At the time I think it was the best price I was likely to see for awhile so I snapped it up.
My LGS has blaster 9mm(reman) for 34.95 per box of 50
those who have been through this before saw it coming again a year or so ago... by this time next year there should be a little more sanity (and availability), but it'll take much longer for the prices to get back to where they were an year ago.... if the ever do.

Lesson: set reasonably high round counts as your "low water mark" then stock at least twice that amount.
A couple of weeks ago I found some fussion 223 at Wal-Mart. I was glad to find any 223 so I grabed up my three boxes without thinking. When I got to the car I realized that I just paid 23.95 for twenty rouns of ammo. Over a dollar a round. It was a slap yourself in the head moment. I had said I would not pay that for ammo and I just did it without thinking. I have got to look before I leap fom now on.:frown:
