glock 30 4th gen or xds for my next purchase?

I keep flip flopping on my decision. im looking for something for ccw. im a bigger guy 6'1 220 lbs so im sure i can hide either one no problem. i like the glock 30 for the capacity and the grips interchange ability . i like the xds for its small size and weight... makes it easier to conceal. I have seen many negative posts on xd-talk regarding xds problems. i assume most these problems have been worked out by now. what do you guys think? anyone have both? which one would you choose?

I really like Glocks, so my opinions are biased. Recently purchased a Gen 4 Glock 30 and wonder why I did not jump on the G30 bandwagon sooner. It is one sweet shooter. My wife was surprised at how accurate and soft shooting it is. I do know a couple people with XDs 45's and they are happy with them.
I have a G30SF, not the Gen 4 G30. I do have a Gen4 G29 if the Gen4 part in that frame is pertinent in some way. I also have the XDs. I have never had a problem with either.

You will hear/read negative things about the Xds on XDTalk. I have tried to make mine fail and it never has. Personally I think the complaining is much more prevalent than the problem really is. I also think some of the problems may be shooter induced. Regardless, it has been an excellent gun for me. It is a drastically different size and weight than the G30. I normally carry it IWB, but I have a pocket holster for the XDs and it truly isn't much larger than my CM9 which I pocket carry exclusively. The Xds is a solid platform and I have no reservations carrying it at all. I do always take an extra 7rd mag with me too though.

The G30 is a hunk of metal and polymer by comparison, but that is the price you pay for 5 more rounds of 45ACP. I do carry both my G30 or Gen4 G29 occasionally in the summer, but the XDs goes with me more often that time of year. The G30 is noticeably softer to shoot, but, the Xds is not bad at all IMO, and I didn't buy it to be a range gun anyway.

If 45ACP is your cartridge of choice, I think it's clear that your best option is to buy both :biggrin2:

If you can only get one, my opinion is to get the one you feel you'll be more likely to carry. If you're concerned about size, weight and concealment, the choice is the XDs. Otherwise, why wouldn't you take the bigger gun with more capacity that's a little more shooter friendly?

It's nice to have such good choices, isn't it?

Do you really want to chance weak ejection with a Glock, you have been warned!
I just bought my XDS bi-tone on Saturday. Took it to the range today and ran 50 FMJ's through it and 20 200gr +P gold dots. No malfunctions or issues of any kind. Additionally, the trigger on this thing is freaking SWEET for a striker fired gun. Makes accuracy a forgone conclusion and I was holding groups almost as tight as my Kimber 1911 delivers (needless to say, I was IMPRESSED). The only thing I don't like about the gun is the capacity. 6 rounds is not many, but cops carried 6 shooters for a long time so I am sure I will manage.

The Glock wins in the "tried and true" category, no question. But the 30 is heavy and thick and not as accurate (in my hands anyways). If you spend time in really bad areas where you might face multiple attackers (gangs, etc) then the G30 is not a bad idea (then again, neither is an UZI). If not, the XDs will serve you well, at least IMO.

To me, they serve different roles entirely. I bought the XDs because I have standardized on .45 and I wanted something light and thin for those uber hot summer days when I don't feel like strapping on my 1911 rig. It will fit the bill perfectly. But no matter what you buy, you can't lose.

OP - Those are two very different guns. If you can conceal the G30, then it's a no brainer.
Just an FYI that the XDS problems are very real. I am one that experienced the exact same things that many others have...And they have NOT been worked out yet. You have the same chance of problems occurring if you purchase now as people who purchased 6 months ago...Glocks have never fit my hands...good luck

Guess I got lucky then, mine is flawless thus far.

I sometimes carry a G30 Gen 2 and it is a pocket rocket! I don't worry about scratches, dust, dirt or grime with the G30. And it always goes bang! That would be my choice.
I have two XD40s -- sc and service. Several thousand rounds and no problems - ever.

I bought them after shooting the Glock and XD. I shot XD better -- which was more important to me than opinions from an internet forum. Even this one! They just fit my hand and suited my eye better. Lots of other folks feel the opposite and are right to go with Glock.
I have both a Gen 3 Glock 30 (Identical to Gen 4 except for grip texture near as I can tell) and an XDs. The G30 is a great gun if you can hide it. The XDs is a great gun for when you can't hide the G30.

So? Get both of course.

I second that. My former XDS was a complete nightmare. Light primer strikes, out of battery, FTF, FTE, stovepipes. You name it. That's over 300 rounds worth - one issue per mag or two. I love all my XD's but this one was sold away. Simply couldn't trust it. If you get a good XDS sample, keep it! It's a sweet gun when it actually goes bang!
I voted "other".

Just compromise and get a Springfield XD(M) 3.8" 45ACP Compact which comes with a 9 round mag and a 13 round mag Springfield Armory - Introducing the XD(M)® Polymer Handgun

If you are dead set on one of the two, just get them both now because you know if you only buy one now you will at some point buy the other one.

By the way, I have both the XD-s and the G30 gen 4. Both are excellent guns. I find the XD-s slightly more comfortable to carry and the G30 slightly more comforting to carry.
I voted XDS I have one I like it and have not had one problem with it I have about 300 rounds through it but no problems and the recoil is not bad and I'm not a big guy.

I actually think the older XD 45 compact is better than the XDM version. For some weird reason SA decided to offer one less round in the short mag (9 in the XDM compared to the XD's 10 rounds). The barrel of the XDM is only .2 inches shorter and the grip only a smidge shorter than the XD. Not quiet enough to make it more concealable IMO. Plus the XD comes in about $100 cheaper. I own the XD 45 compact. One of my favorites.
I'm 6'1", 215 lbs. I carry the XDs IWB and it is very comfortable for a cc gun. I've shot exactly 659 rounds through it thus far (got it in January of this year) and have not had a single issue with it. I can't believe how easy it is to cc this gun.
I checked 'other'...love the Glock-30, but would prefer the Gen-3, and make it the SF.:yup:
I have shot the Gen3 G30sf and XDS but own the Gen3 G30SF and carry it often. I am 5'11 165 and can conceal it with no problems.
I have NOT shot the G30 Gen 4 ... so I am of the opinion of retsupt99... but decided to vote Glock.

Good luck and let us know what you get.
personally do not like the beaver tail style grip safeties. Glocks haven't any manual safeties; less to go wrong under stress.

I would consider the the presence of the grip safety on the XDs and whether that is a pro or a con to you.

Then I would look at the limited capacity of the XDs compared to the G30 as a possible con and the extra width and height of the G30 as a possible con.

All that being said, if I found that I could handle carrying the extra width and height of the G30 then it would be my carry piece.

Of course this is coming from someone that...as soon as I find a money tree...and a Glock tree..would buy a G30S...
