***Range report on page 3***

I got my first .22 tonight.

It's a lovely Wally-World special Ruger 10/22 with a 22" stainless barrel.

I have yet to read the manual, but should I give it some lube before taking it to the range? And is there a preferred way to break it in? What has been your experience? Thanks, as always!

when i was younger my dad bought myself and my brother a 10/22, needless to say being kids that we didn't give it the proper cleaning it needed, but we didn't have any problems until about 2000 rounds later, then it started to jam. i have never oiled it, i just used some of the Remington gun cleaner on the internals to remove powder build up and she runs smooth.

don't want to scare you with this but now that i think of it, you should do REGULAR maintenance. I only say this because i saw my dad's best friend's 10/22 blew a cartridge on its way to battery( dunno if it was ammo or the gun but scary none the less). it blew the mag clear out of the gun, lodged the slide outward at a 45 degree angle and shot some spring(didn't know where it came from exactly) about 20 yards to the right.

again, don't take this as something to deter the use of the gun, but as somthing to encourage you to take care of your firearm.

Had one years ago, think banana mags, get em before they do something stupid like outlaw them, that's right they tried that.

Lube the bolt a little and shoot the heck out of it mine prefers Federal lighting in the bulk pack.. i have the same stainless with 22" barrel love the express style sights on it.

22 isn't like a high powered rifle so no break in method

Lube and shoot. I ran 1,000's of rounds thru my dads gun as a kid, finally bought my own 10/22. they are good guns, other than the heavy trigger pull.

they are fun aren't they ??? I bought an older made 1968 well-shot 10/22 for pennies. Tore it down to parade rest and made a custom rifle... cheap all around fun...

another caliber thats just kick-butt tack driving fun is the .17 mach2 (.17 HM2).
How about a possible 5 shots inside a size of a dime at 100 yards... yeah ! :)

Loved my first one!

Sold my first one (DUH!)

Love my second one! Slapped on little 4 power scope. These eyes can't capture the irons anymore (bifocals) so scope a necessity...sigh

Thanks everyone! I want to pick up a Simmons scope for it before I go shoot it this weekend. My intent has been to make it a scoped plinker.

I'm going to have the shop bore-sight it for me too. Woo-hoo!

When I get a chance (probably after adding the scope), I may post a pic. Gotta get to work now...

Great!

Emphasis tho (mine) - little oil .... less is more. Watch for crud build tho - .22 is messy stuff and a cake builds up over time so clean around breech face, extractor recess etc from time to time.

As long as bore is dry shoot away, a lot! No break in needed.

I've been on a .22 kick myself lately. As far as breaking in your new toy, just make sure the bore is clear and dry and run about $20 worth of ammo through it!:para:

As others have mentioned, 22LR can be fairly dirty, so eventually you'll have to take it apart and clean out the crud. Fortunately the 10/22 is amazingly simple to field strip and clean.

When you start to get bored with your new rifle, fear not. Pull up the rimfirecentral forum and get ready to smoke your checkbook. Some (many) of those guys have taken a WW special just like yours and invested THOUSANDS of $$ in the quest for that last little bit of accuracy. :danceban:

10/22s are probably the most fun out there. So many aftermarket parts to fixem up the way ya want. And like others said they run forever. I have a 3x9 bushnell scope and sling on mine. And this summer will do a trigger job and add hi-cap magazines. Thats the only downfall to these out of the box is the heavy trigger. But there still pretty accurate. My 22s like cci ammo they seem to be the most consistantout of my 22s YMMV. Have fun with that new gun. Sixgun

I really dont want to add too many upgrades...I like the KISS look of it with the exception of getting a scope.

However, the trigger is fairly stiff. Is there anything I can do to lighten or "smooth" the trigger pull on my own?

Also, what do you all recommend using for lube on the 10/22? I've got Tetra gun oil and Break-free CLP. Thanks!
