Ok, (Re: Guns and Boats (or just salt air)) so a Glock is Tenifer coated, and a Mossberg Mariner Shotgun won't corrode. Now lets say for a moment that you, your family, and another family are on a 100' (+-$3,000,000) sailing yacht, sailing around the world, visiting the South Pacific, Island hopping, generally enjoying yourselves for...say a year. (not purely hypothetical)

There are 4 or 5 hotspots out there for modern pirates, (Suez to Horn of Africa, Java Straight and South China Sea, South Pacific islands and atolls, etc...). There are also drug runners, gangs, corrupt govts etc... You need to be able to dock in atleast some planned places (perhaps you plan them to be gun friendly) but no port in the world is going to let you in with a 50 cal machine gun mounted on your deck. (Some places, if you project a presence will not bother you, others you want a low profile).

I know you are probably thinking that if it is a $3,000,000 sailboat what the H&*# am I doing, and why can't I afford a $50,000 weapon system - but lets say we are stuck with a realistic budget. (plus pirates aren't guaranteed)

(I also wonder how MR. ANTIGUNGLOBALBANONALLFIREARMSGEORGESOROS protects his huge yachts)

Carry nothing you can't afford to ditch IMMEDIATELY, if being boarded by local customs. Being raped by pirates, or by their cousins, in the local clink? Hmmmmmmmmm....

Couple of things I've heard good reports of are nail-planks, placed along the deck surfaces, at night. A flare gun, with LOTS of flares :gah: . A deck spout from the bilge......:gah: :gah: :blink:

If you choose a high powered rifle make sure it's not in a "military" caliber. Other countries can be odd about that.

If I won the powerball on Saturday and was planning on taking my 100' yacht "Wet Dream" on a world cruise, there are a couple of possible courses of action I might take.

1. Outfit the boat with a well-hidden arms locker stocked with quality, marinized small arms and ammo. Nothing too sexy, mostly along the lines that others have mentioned here or on other threads. Glocks, marine shotties, FALs, etc. An M79 40mm grenade launcher would be nice, but probably not feasible. Certainly not legally feasible.

2. A boat that big is going to have a full-time crew, probably 3-5+ personnel. I would pick them carefully, hopefully finding some ex-Coast Guard types. Then I would invest in quality training for them, both boat handling and shooting schools. Before we left port, we would have a set of battle drills down cold for possible situations. One of them would be EMT qualified, with an assistant recruited from some "Baywatch" type outfit (blonde and smoking hot). Also a good chef.

3. Before entering really high-risk waters, I would consider hiring a small detachment of trigger pullers (4-5 guys) from a "consulting firm" that could be flown out on a helicopter from a convenient port. They would be extra insurance, and integrated into the boat battle drills.

4. Whenever possible, I would file a float plan with the nearest Navy base or at-sea task force, giving the standard info on route, timeline, etc. Not sure how to go about this, but with the kind of money I am planning on winning, I would figure it out.

Anyway, that's my plan and I'm sticking to it... The wife and I are heading to the Bahamas this summer, taking my buddy's 35' center console from West Palm to Port Lucaya. We're just taking an 870 Marine and a .357 Smith, both of which will get registered when we hit port. While there are incidents in that part of the Bahamas, the bigger concern is probably running out of Corona.:image035:

GLOCK 17's or 21's for myself and crew plus either AR's, AK's, M1A's, FAL's, or CETME's. Probably the AK's due to reliablity. But I like the 308 better and the gun can be longer because you have got plenty of run to manuver on the open ocean. So maybe a full-size M1A would be best. Also Remington Marine Magnums with knoxx Spec-Ops stocks.

been doing some more research, apparently the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has an international convention against the use of firearms on merchant vessels.

Of course a pleasure craft isn't a merchant vessel, but they don't address that issue, other than to say that they suspect many times more unreported pleasure craft pirate attacks per year than merchant vessels - with your chance of getting killed above 50% (but that use of firearms will raise that %)

IMO and IMB recommended defenses to armed pirates:
Water hoses, electric fences, complicity

For my research I wrote the Naval Warfare Center at Coronado, CA. This is the place where they train SEALs. One of their officers called me at home and said they couldn't answer my questions and further my questions reflected a measure of military knowledge so they were considered classified in the first place! I didn't quite understand their response so I asked my buddy, then stationed at SOCOM HQ and he said not to worry about it, they'd complimented me...sorta. I wrote the article with the help and pix supplied by the US Coast Guard. lol

Stay away from both Cuban and especially Haitian waters! Their naval capabilities are tiny but the equipment on any sized civilian vessel is worth many times the combined pay of each crewmen and the captain of any patrol boat. They will board you, strip the boat of electronics and oh yeah....no witnesses. Piracy in that area is less prevalent now than in the 1980's. Back then, when I was fresh out of the army my friends used to hire me to crew their sailboats to Nassau and other areas, although they rarely set foot in those ultra high crime ports. I never provided my own weapons. Usually there was a Mini-14 SS and a couple thousand rounds of ammo in cans. A couple of Commander 45s also in SS and the infamous "engine room gun" a Weatherby 375 H & H Magnum. The idea being that a shot astern might puncture an engine to disable it, when loaded with FMJ 300gr solids.

In this scenario, I'd hire a permanent chief of security, say a SEAL Petty Officer. Pay him enough that he doesn't get the idea to sell out. I'd still sleep with my H&K USP under my pillow.

I have no idea. I kept a copy of course. But the 'zine went belly up. This was sorta before the internet went big, but it might be online. I kept all three of the articles I wrote for them. Another on Chemical Warfare and terrorism in 1991 (did I call it or what?) and yet another on Hurricane Andrew. :wave:

There are sub-caliber conversion "shells"- shoot a .308 out of your 12g, etc., but I have no idea what the accuracy would be like. You're still running into the problem of ammo. Some 3rd world port/customs monkey finds a .308/9mm/.223 round, and your boat is likely to become property of the Grand High Poohbah, and either the crabs will feast that night, or you'll be in a deep, dark hole, until you can pay your ransom (excuse me, "bail" ).
