That's probably a good answer that I should try. Maybe I'd come off as nicer. I just see 'em coming, and before they even ask (or immediately after) I just put my left hand out palm outward and say "NO."
That's an odd situation. I live in a rural area, and most of the local miscreants are methbillies who run in pairs behind the wheels of junky old cars or pickups, looking to steal when you aren't at home. A brazen lone guy approaching face to face on a bike would certainly be out of the ordinary.
I think you did okay. I will give most anyone a buck if they have a story and ask in a non threatening manner, but usually try to not get within grabbing range, which sometimes means placing the bill on the ground. Seeing your Ruger, small as it is, was probably a good thing. If you were actually being cased, he probably scratched you off his "maybe" list.
