This has a real use for an obviously niche market. Lots of pest eradication applications, including commercial ones could benefit from a handy firearm that doesn't sling solid projectiles that fly too far or penetrate excessively. This one ought to develop into a slow but steady seller for the discerning shooter.

The major .22 rifle producers once offered variants based on their .22 rifle models that were smooth bore to be dedicated to this very purpose. Remington, Winchester, Marlin, Mossberg and perhaps others sold these from before World War II into the 1970s and they were nominally popular. The guns didn't "set the woods on fire" in market sales, but were steadily sold in smaller numbers. They are collectible today and uncommonly found.

Remington in particular developed the notion of the garden gun to more efficiently throw its minuscule shot charge with its Routledge bore. The rear half of the barrel being .22 smoothbore, the forward half of the barrel counter-bored to a larger diameter of around .40 caliber which gave less shot deformation resulting in meaningful improvements to shot dispersion and even patterns. It was said that 85% of the 120-pellet payload of No. 12 shot in the crimped .22 Long Rifle shot shell (rat shot) cartridge would strike within a 6-inch circle at 33 feet.

I had never heard of this. Thank you

The game sounds like it was a lot of fun and good experience.

Really?

I've heard that, but never observed it.

They lap it up, but can't expel the gas, right?

OOO... man!

The ultimate would be to catch a rat, well drunk on Coke but not yet expired, and shoot him with an expanding bullet.

Boom!!!

Don't do this in the house.
