Herter's 9mm TNJ

Can anyone tell me anything about the quality of Herter's Aluminum Case Total Nylon Jacketed 9mm (115 gr) from Cabellas? I was in this morning and they had 3 boxes (50 round) for $13.99, so I bought them.

I will not have a chance to get out to the range for a few days, but wondered if anyone else has shot these?

It will be my first time shooting aluminum cased, so it will be an interesting experience... Maybe.

I wonder if we will see a lot more companies going with alternatives to Brass.

Never heard of them. I hope you will update us after you try them. I kind of like aluminum stuff sometimes; I don't feel guilty leaving it on the floor when I'm too lazy to reload them.

Just FINDING 9mm for $13.99 per 50 is reason enough to buy them. Around here gougers are charging (and idiots still paying) $24 per 50.

I bought a case of it 2 months ago when you could still find online ammo at fairly reasonable prices from a few locations. Have only fired 100 rounds so far (making my supply last ) but it worked flawlessly in my Glock 19.

I hope not. Using factory ammo pick-ups is how I get my brass.
I shot over 500 rounds of it through my M&P 9c about of month ago during various range trips and IDPA matches and it ran flawlessly. It was noticeably cleaner than most of the other budget ammo that I've used and left no fouling. I'll definitely buy it again. Use it with confidence.
This is good news. A buddy is coming into town this weekend and I think that we will head out to the range for practice. I will let you know how it runs.
Bought several boxes from Cabela's; shot one box. FWIW, every round fired in my LC9. A few rounds fired with a bit more gusto than the others. Couldn't tell if they were dirtier than standard FMJ such as Federal as I was also shooting Aquila FMJ so both or either could be the culprit for the extra grunge.
I bought some from Cabela's online the other day. Got the shipment yesterday and while it's labeled Herter's, it says it's manufactured by Blazer. Haven't shot any yet.

The local range/gun store is charging 50 bucks for WW 9mm. A lot of noobs out there buying this over priced stuff not knowing any better. Best part, none of them are reloaders and more then happy when I ask if I can keep the spent brass.
Father-in-law told me a guy at his work was selling 9mm for $50/50rd ... i laughed and said no way. Before craziness started, i was paying 13.99/50 for Federal 9mm FMJ. Dude can ask whatever he wants.. some idiot will pay it, but not me.

FWIW, Ive used the Herter's brand from Cabelas in a few calibers, not the TNJ rounds tho, and its always been good budget ammo. Nearly always made by some big name, well known manufacturer, like was mentioned above by paaiyan, Blazer is a CCI brand. And ive always liked CCI ammo. The 32acp Herters I have for my pocket gun/BUG is made by Sellier & Bellot, and seems loaded close to Euro specs too.

Just be glad you found any at all.

Range Update:

I put 50 of these through my M&P Shield without a single issue. They shot awesome and the spent aluminum casings did not appear to be any different than the brass. My buddy bought 5 boxes the other day and was happy he did after seeing how well it cycled.

Overall, for target ammo, I give them a thumbs up.

Bought 5 boxes at Cabelas over Thanksgiving weekend because they were only 13.99 a box. Glad to hear they work okay. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try them out this weekend.
Shot a bunch thru my Shield and my Glock (lone wolf barrel) with no issues at all.
A friend of mine told me he could no longer use .357sig, or .40 cal as he sold all those pistols in these calibers and wanted to get rid of some ammo.
I just bought some from him.
Here is what I paid,

Practice:
40 Cal 15 boxes of 50rnd. Federal Amer Eagle AE40R1 180 Gr. $15 bx
4 boxes of 50rnd. Speer Lawman 53652 180gr $15 bx

357 Sig 8 boxes of 50rnd. Federal Amer Eagle AE357S2 125gr $ 15 bx

Defense:
40 Cal

4boxes of 50rnd Speer Gold Dot 53962 180 gr $24 bx ( if boxes aren't full and it has 20 rds N/C . I'll let you know as I sort through )

357Sig 6 boxes of 50rnd. Federal HST P357SHST1 125gr $24 bx

37 boxes total with 50 rounds each.
Ammo, around here anyway(few counties around Detroit) is still hit or miss, and they are still limiting. Walmart is about the only one close to the lower prices of a couple years ago, and that's if you are there and help them unload the truck so to speak.

I shot some of this stuff on Saturday. 9mm. While it shot well, as in putting rounds on target, I did get one fail to fire (which had a full strike on the primer), an unpleasant burnt plastic smell (obviously the Nylon burning through the barrel), and the casings were ejecting right back in my face, and not off the the side.

To be fair though, I have been doing a test on my M&P 9, to see how long I can shoot it without cleaning before I run into any failures. Which is at 2600 rds (Failure to fire from the Herters ammo, not counting due to ammo and not gun failure).

I will be cleaning my M&P and doing a fair ammo test between:
Herters/CCI Aluminum TNJ
Herters Brass
CCI Blazer Aluminum &
CCI Blazer Brass.

Just to do some unofficial/opinion based testing to see how it stacks up. Will keep you posted.
