Glad folks are making fun of the morons that think taping a banana to a backing is "art". <img src="http://www.defensivecarry.com/forum/images/smilies/vol_1/ticking.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Ticking" class="inlineimg" />

That's just sauce on top, like a sauce it deepens the flavor of the stupidity.

I went to HS with a guy that is now a famous avaunt guard "artist". I saw him a couple of years ago receiving a check from some mega-corporation for the "art" he was commissioned to make for the lobby of their HQ. Funny, I had the locker next to him for 6 years (7-12th) and the smile on his face when he was receiving the check was the same one he had on his face every time he was pulling one over on the priests all those years ago. Hmmmm.......

The guy who taped a banana to the wall as art actually did three of them in different cities. At one of the displays, another avant garde artist took the banana off the wall and ate it in full view of media cameras. There didn't seem to be any consequences. Apparently, the original artist got that that action was as much art as his "art" and it got him publicity.

I would agree - they are equal in their relative "artness". 0=0

You just have to admit though that if any of you could duct tape a banana to a wall and retire on that action....you would be in the supermarket produce section in a heartbeat.
And therein lies the problem...only an acclaimed idiot... uhh, ... I mean artist could get acclaim for taping anything to a wall. it also exemplifies the worthlessness of most 'art'. Art was lost a hundred years ago, now it's something else.

In a small town close to here they erected a big silver sculpture like thing that seriously looked like a comet flying into a horses rear opening and someone had the audacity to call it art. Most everyone that saw it wanted it gone. A local business owner who started as a garage machinist and retired after doing decades of John Deere's contracted engine machine work bought the hideous piece and put it in front of his pretentious mansion overlooking the river. The reason for my derision of the man is because he quickly forgot his humble beginnings and shunned most of the people he worked with in town as he got richer. I personally know this man...he's a Grinch all year long.

So....you're insinuating that my latest idea of submerging coughed up cat hairballs in an aquarium filled with WD40 would NOT be ART?

A lot of what I see labeled as modern art looks to me to be the fallout of a paint store explosion, I basically do not understand it at all.

I would never insinuate! I will call that idea insane though. But who knows, take it to NYC and get some schmuck that owns a 'gallery' to display it and you might just retire a millionaire! There's a catch however, you need to come up with some asinine tale of how your soul prompted you to do it, that it's an existential tour of the nether worlds with sub-contexts of Halloween and New Years joy all rolled up into one subliminal yet ecstatic yearning for the past. Or sum such doo-doo. It's not the visuals, it's the total load of BS that's given to explain the visuals.
