A friend and I just made our first kydex holster. It's a paddle holster for my Glock 27. It has a straight drop and I made it carry on, or just forward of, my strong side hip.

My buddy is a professional furniture and bass guitar maker. (By the way, you can see his guitar work at HenryBasses.com | Home)

Anyway, he is quite a craftsman. This is our first holster, so it will only get better from here.

Looks pretty darn good to me JSB. Where did you get the raw materials. Did you have template or another holster to go from? If you lived in NWI I'd be tempted buy one from you.

I got my materials from http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php

I did make a template from another holster that had about a 20 degree cant. I wanted a straight drop, so I made one!

We would be happy to whip one up for anyone who wants to give us a try. Right now, we can mold for a Glock 19, 26, 27, and 30.

Soon, I plan to make one for my new Ruger LCR.

Kydex is fun to work with, I've made two of my own so far. One is a tuck-able for my PT140 and the other is for between the belt and pants for my LCP.

Do you use a mold for the gun when you use Kydex or the gun itself?

If you use the gun as the mold can the Kydex molding cause damage to it?

I always wondered about working with Kydex. I've seen methods for knife sheaths and they use the knife itself so I was wondering about it when it comes to firearms.

We use the gun itself for the mold. It doesn't hurt the gun at all.

Asking a silly question but, as I was once told, if you do not ask the question--you never find out the answer. The site for supply of kydex is listed in a post and the use of the gun is the methodology for fit---what is the procedure to get the kydex into the gun's shape? Is this a heat process? How about a detail or two on how you take a piece of kydex and end up with a fitted holster? I just got a FIST kydex thumb push holster for my Kel Tec P3AT--the lightness and ease of use WITHOUT ANY POCKET MOVEMENT WHATSOEVER is amazing. Appreciate a brief "how do you make it" reply. Thanks in advance.

There are some threads already that give a pretty detailed step by step procedure for making a kydex holster. Also I believe Knifekits website has some instructions on forming and the tools used.

I don't have the time right now to go back and find them for you but if you do a search you will find some very helpful info.

Yeah, the tools needed and the process are really pretty simple. We used an old toaster oven to heat the kydex and a homemade press (foam and plywood) to form it. My buddy's basic woodworking tools made it easy (band saw, sander, drill press).

Go ahead and search on the forum and on the web for full-blown instructions. It really is easier than I thought.

One warning--don't heat the kydex too much. We had one piece shrink up and become unusable.

looking for a kydex holster maker in kc

hey i have been looking at your thread. thought i would try to make my own holsters, but if there is a pro out there why play. I have been toying with the idea of developing and marketing a different type of holster. kinda a hybrid. In my thought process I have come to the conclusion that I ought to use a kydex retention method.

so i am looking for a local or near local person who does kydex holsters. have any suggestion.

Hope you're still watching this site. Wondering how your kydex paddle holster is holding up. If it worked for you, would you mind sharing your pattern. You are the first one I've found who made a paddle. All others were straight holsters. Thanks

me too! I like your paddle holster. Seems that no one is making them for some reason. Thanks for inspiring me to make one myself! :)

You will find many good videos of making kydex holsters on youtube. PHLster.com gives a complete material list and where to buy them and how much they run and then he demonstrates the process in detail of making a holster. very good
There are other videos as well.

I have an XDS with a crimson trace and couldn't find anyone who could make me a kydex paddle holster. Just today I have found one on ebay and he said he was going to put a couple of those up for auction. you might check there and see if any are available yet. He made mine when I requested it.

Very nice job! Very hard to order premade kydex paddle holsters. I have a springfield armory XDS and no one was making paddle kydex for these with a crimson trace. I contacted a kydex maker on ebay and he did custom make me one for my model and specs and said he was going to list them for others. So if anyone has the same situation you might check out ebay.
