Thanks for the thoughts on the .41 and the hot .45/10mm loads.
I've thought about the role of hotter loads in certain situations, e.g. 357SIG, .400Corbon etc.
Another answer to the original question might be the FN FiveSeven pistol. Not unaffordable, but kind of a niche gun where ammo cost and availability might preclude the kind of extra inventory (spares, mags, ammo etc) and training that something like a G19 and lots of boring 9mm rounds might easily address.
ETA: BTW the original reference was to the corporate mercenary Turner in William Gibson's "Count Zero", a really tightly written and atmospheric early cyberpunk novel. The same character insists on exfiltration via a small tactical jet, which proves prescient.
