In troubled times....G30 for me.

I typically switch my carry between a .357 Snubbie and a 1911 Commander; however, in these troubled times I've been thinking about having a carry weapon that has a bit more capability. The G30 was one of my first carry pistols. It fits the bill.

While I do love the 1911 platform, the G30 carries a couple extra rounds of John Moses Browning wisdom in a slightly more compact form-factor.

And I've started carrying a G21 mag loaded with an extra 12 rounds as back-up. That means I've gone from 5 rounds to 23. And those 23 rounds are 45 Auto.

I shoot a 1911 slightly better and slightly faster, but the G30 has amazing accuracy and capability for me. There are so many newer carry options, but I find that I'm drawn back to the tried and tested. True, it's a bit chunky and a bit heavy, but it fits me well, I shoot it well, and it is utterly reliable. I'll accept a bit more printing and weight in exchange for capacity and capability.

Anyone else carry a G30 these days? Has anyone else changed his or her carry because of the current levels of unrest and violence? Are you looking for a new carry weapon? Or using something 'tried and true'? Or sticking with what you have and know?

Just curious.

I still carry my G30 when my back allows it. Or when I go to known Indian country. I'm okay for a short timespan, but much longer and its weight really has an affect on the back. No plans on getting rid of it though. And yes, I have a G21 mag also, used mainly for HD duty, and I installed a G21 smooth trigger. Never cared much for that serrated OEM trigger

I can't say anything negative about your choice as it seems to be an old favorite which is a good place to be.
I sold my 1911 for a G21sf because I still love 45acp but, wanted a little more barrel length and capacity if I wanted it and since the 1911 was a new platform for me my confidence in the safety off, safety back on routine after an adrenaline rush was just not there for me and neither was my desire to get that down to an instinct. I still don't carry the Glock though.

That said, the 38 snubby is my old favorite over anything else I have ever carried and I have put decades of time into handling and shooting the little angry squirrels.

Instead of radical change I am experimenting with an additional carry gun to my constant AIWB 642 setup. Today it was a second snubby OWB@3:00. Very comfortable and familiar which is not a bad thing for a firearm to be.

I think when things go south "familiar" ,"proficient" and "confidence" goes a long ways toward survival.

Solid advice. No arguments here.

I've had this G30 (a Gen 'one') for over twenty years. While it doesn't feel like a 1911, it still feels like a nice pair of jeans.

So, for me, it meets your requirements of familiar, confidence inspiring, and proficient. (y)

Oh...the G21 is one of my favorite handguns. Again, no 1911, but it is one helluva pistol.

My Glock 30s usually sits in my safe, but I wear it occasionally, just because.

When I leave our little valley, I carry my P320 Compact in .357 Sig....of all my Handguns, I shoot that one the best.

My routine carry is a government model 1911 in either .45 ACP or 10mm and one spare magazine on my belt. I also carry a Sig P938 9mm and one spare magazine in my pockets. For woods carry, I usually swap the 1911 for a 4" S&W 29-2 .44 magnum revolver and two speed loaders on my belt. For Portland Metro carry, I swap the 1911 for a Springfield Armory XDM in either .40 S&W with sixteen plus one or 10mm with fifteen plus one and two spare magazines on my belt.

I hear ya. Although 7+1 rounds of 45 Auto is more than enough peace-of-mind for me most days.

The Sig 365XL....XL.....is on my radar, but right now the G30 seems to give me more confidence. I know it. I have faith in it. That 365XL of yours....with a 15 round mag...that does seem like a solid choice for these troubled times. Sad to say.

While a S&W 640 or Ruger LCR in the pocket is easier to carry in some ways......I don't care. The G30 is getting the call. In some ways I have to wonder why I carried anything else...sure I print a bit more...but who cares right now?

My Glock 30 has been my HD nightstand gun for over 5 years and will continue to be for many years! My Sig P-365 gets the nod for EDC about 90% the time these days.

The j frame goes with me more times than not. There are other choices but none as comforting that carry as well and I trust.

I have a lot of respect for that ultra-stout pistol, the G30. VERY accurate and a comfortable shooter. Ultra reliable. As much as I LOVE 1911s, I would pick the G30 over a 1911 in a threat situation - three more rounds can make a difference, and uber history of reliability. I did carry my G30 for a period of time.

Ultimately, I transitioned to .40S&W, for near-9mm capacity and excellent penetrative capability without deflecting. Of course, I still love .45acp. I typically carry a P320 or an M&P these days, in .40S&W or 9mm.

Much respect for my G30 and my G21SF, however:

I'm going through a similar question. I love revolvers, especially magnum revolvers, but the events of late have me thinking that higher capacity and faster reloads might be wise. I've gone from a favorite S&W 65, to a 1911, but I am seriously considering switching to for a while to a Glock 20, with the grip that's been cut to G29 size.

Not the same as a Glock 30, but pretty much same size, just a 10mm.

Nope. My main 3, the 1911, G26, and j frame revolver are the ones I stand by.
I might switch out the g26 or 1911, but the j frame is always in the pocket.
As easy as it is to simply put a new mag in a 1911, I find it difficult to consider it a capacity deficiency.

Sure, but you're one of "those guys" anyhow.

For me, for most situations, I'll stick with the Dan Wesson. I do like my G30SF, and I shoot it slightly better than my Defender, but I shoot the DW best of the three, and so there's that confidence aspect of it. 8+1, and when I go out I add two extra magazines. If, perchance, I must go into the metro area, I might consider leaving the DW at home and carrying the G45 and two spares, and pocket carry the P365.

I don't carry the G30 mainly for the lame reason that I don't have a holster for it yet.

FTR, after the church shooting in which Mr. Wilson saved lives with his head shot from across the sanctuary, I started reconsidering my carry choices. I had been pocket carrying the P365 for my 'church gun', but I have to be real, I'm not as accurate with it as I am with any of my .45's.

In March of this year I made the switch to the Shadow Systems MR918 pistols, sold off the last couple of Glock 19s that I had. The 19 had been my EDC gun since I switched to it back in 2005 (except for 2016 & 2017 when I experimented with a couple of single stack 9mms). Still carry the MR918 with one spare mag, I did add a second spare mag to my EDC bag. Still using the same holsters, Kramer OWB horsehide scabbard or Sparks SSII IWB.

My wife is still EDCing her Glock 26 with a spare mag. She strictly uses a FIST ultra thin kydex IWB holster.

From what I am seeing, I’m not sure capacity (in the gun) is going to matter. I’m seeing video of rioters getting in the face of numerous defenders armed with rifles. If they’re not afraid of rifles, they’re not going to fear a pistol, so if it comes to shooting they will be on top of you if they decide to.

Add in that some of the rioters have guns too, and I’m not sure that things will last too long. Either they scatter, or you’ll be dead.

Now, if you’re holed up in a defensive position, then ammo capacity might matter, but you should be able to reload. So in the current situation, I think total load out is more important than the round count in the gun per se.

I carried my G30 on duty and for CCW. I’ve gone back to 9mm more in my G26 for a few reasons, such as the ballistics out of my Rem Golden Saber 124 gr + P is actually better than my .45 carry rounds. I also had some duds with my G30 that were probably due to hard primers, but...my G26 has never skipped a beat.

To be sure, 10thmtn, my priorities are 1) situational awareness and 2) conflict avoidance. Armed conflict is the last thing I want.

I think, and I suspect you'd agree, a "gray man" approach is a good idea now. OC in urban settings may draw unwanted attention and is open to hostile interpretation. But we all know that the unexpected can happen...which is why we try to be prepared, I assume. With that in mind, and awareness of the changing dynamic on the street, I believe it's prudent for me to carry a pistol with a greater capacity that I also shoot well.

My snubbie is back in the safe. The G30 is on the hip. (y)

My carry philosophy "in troubled times" is the same as it was before, whenever.
Statistics, location, time of day are not part of the equation; I keep it simple.
Of the concealable pistols owned strive to carry what would be preferred in hand to defend yourself.
Its that simple.
The minimum that meets my prefer in hand is a Glock 23/32 - Glock 20SF/22/35 - even better.
Nowhere I'd prefer a 38 snub/pocket 380 rather than a Glock 23 (22/35) and I carry accordingly.

+ spare mag too

I’ve went back to carrying me G36 more lately. I like the bigger caliber and heavier bullets it’s deploys over my G43. And with a Clipdraw and trigger guard holster, it’s carries nicely for me. But it’s still carried around my small rural area. About the only thing I think I will do is add a +1 from Hyve. Not worried about capacity, just grip length. I want either a smaller base plate so I can comfortably curl my pinky under or enough to get a better grip. Plus the ability to put a 230gr bullet into the pack of feral dogs Is comforting

I travel around to bigger cities making deliveries, St Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Louisville, and the like, in Ohio this week so dropping off in Cleveland in just a few hours. Will be carrying my G26 with a G17 in my bag. Extra magazines in there too. Never in the crazy world of the internet would I think I would need two different size weapons that take the same magazines. Never found such justification after hours of searching the world wide wed. But the possibility is too great even for this statistician. After seeing the crazy people rioting over made up reasons, it’s forced me to plan on arming my lovely lady and myself with like weapons. Hell, I’ve even added ANOTHER G26 carried SOB.
