This may sound silly but i'm one of those guys that everytime i shoot,IDPA shoot,range practice,or some school,i keep up with how many rounds i fired on whatever type of weapon i'm using at that time. I post this in my "gun room" on simple pieces of paper out of a note book. My question to this forum is:does anybody offer/sale anything that we be more orderly,professional looking than using a blank piece of paper.

I am ''Mr Approximate'' - much of which is retrospective ''assessment''! It is actually not that inaccurate.

My IDPA thruput is estimated back as 150 rounds (higher sometimes than actual) - and then just count back compo's per month etc. Practice is also estimated and usually rounded out at 100 rounds per session.

I reckon my count is accurate to +/- 100 rounds or so. - I just cannot be bothered to log every darned round! That's old age and lazyness! :biggrin:

That's basicly what I do. I have a small notebook with info about sight settings, zero ranges, round counts, etc. It's either in my gun safe or shooting bag.

I suppose, if anyone thinks they would use it, I could put together a program to allow you to keep track of rounds fired with a PocketPC device... Couldn't imagine that it'd take more than a day or so to do it. I for one won't be carrying a palm-top computer to the range, but I suppose some people might be interested in such a thing.

I use a spreadsheet on my Palm Pilot to keep track of rounds fired in every gun I own. I include the date, and any pertinent info. Hence, I can quickly add up all the rounds fired from a particular gun over a particular time period. The entry is convenient and quick. Works for me.

Don't sound silly to me -- I keep a round log on all my guns for no more reason than I think it's interesting to know! I was doing it in a spreadsheet but I rebuilt it awhile back in a MySQL database so I can eventually put a front-end on it, accessable through a web browser.

I made up a PDF with some logs that I print out and cut apart and stuff in my range bag, that I can scribble on at the range so I don't have to remember what I did; Sometimes it's hard to remember if I bring too many guns or have bulk packaged ammo. I attached it in case anyone cares to use it.

I keep the number of rounds fired in my head, but do keep a spreadsheet list of all of my guns, model numbers, cost, description and serial numbers in case of fire or theft. Come to think of it, I need to add Prospector's guns to the list since I am safekeeping them for him while he is away.

I keep spreadsheets on everything. Guns, ammo on hand, rounds fired for each firearm, etc. Whenever I shoot, I write it in a log, and then later update my spreadsheets. I recently added a column listing the last time I shot each firearm, and went through my logs to find the information. Imagine my shock to find that one of my weapons hadn’t been shot since 1998. I remedied that problem the last weekend.

The only thing I don’t keep on spreadsheets is the firearm information such as serial numbers and purchase information. I’m too afraid of my computer being hacked and the info being stolen. Instead I keep one of these in the gunsafe…

Actually, I am so paranoid that I don’t even keep my spreadsheets on the computer. I keep them on a floppy, and a hard copy printed out.

Eww -- I hope you keep enough backups. Floppies are failures waiting to happen!

The little USB thumbdrives are pretty cheap and handy for storing data on (and even taking with you). Most come with cheesy software that you can encrypt your data with, or you could get something like PGP and encrypt with that instead for better security.

Yes, I keep hardcopies of the data, blank copies of the spreadsheets on an harddrive, and an occasional copy of the data to CD. It would take me about 5 minutes to restore/re-enter the data.

I'm a web developer, so that's why I am so paranoid about my data being stolen. I know how to do it. :biggrin:

Just curious, why keep track of how much ammo goes through your gun? What difference does it make. Plus, when you buy a used pistol, most of the time you have no idea how many rounds have been fired. It is not like the pistol will wear out like tires, so why all the seemingly wasted effort to keep track?

Well, my pistol calls for a new recoil spring every 800 rounds, for instance. How would I know when to change otherwise?
Probably more importantly, for me anyway, is that I enjoy that level of detail. I keep a logbook of every gallon of diesel that goes into my truck, the mileage of every tank, I send oil samples to a lab every 10K miles, etc.
It's a sickness I know, but I enjoy it. :wink:

Same here. It helps in routine maintenance – like replacing springs that may not show wear but I know that if they have x numbers of rounds fired than I should replace them. It’s more accurate indicator than replacing them at given time intervals given some guns I fire a lot and some I hardly ever fire. I also like to keep track of reliability. For example one of my Glocks has several thousands rounds through it with out a hiccup. Nice to know things like that.

Same here JT,I've got a G19 with 7000 rounds thru it and never a problem.I'm getting close to replacing the spring in that gun.How would i know if i didn't keep track.
