Dear Heather:
Thank you very much for taking the time to express your thoughts about the Second Amendment and gun control. I have heard from many constituents who share your concern.
I have passed to my children my love of hunting and firearms, which was passed to me by my father, and to him from his father, and so on, throughout generations.
This is a question of fundamental constitutional rights. The second amendment says, "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Those last four words "shall not be infringed" are clear to me.
Our founding fathers had the foresight to grant us the right to keep and bear arms. It is my duty as your United States Congressman to uphold the Constitution, which was written to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens. I will not support any legislation that undermines fundamental Constitutional rights, including the Second Amendment, and I will continue to protect your right to bear arms.
I do not mean in any way to minimize the suffering of the victims of violence in our society. The tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut is almost beyond my comprehension. I mourn for the suffering families of those precious children. If I knew how to eliminate these tragedies in the future, I certainly would. However, I believe that the answer does not lie in undermining our right to bear arms, but instead in the identification and treatment of those suffering from mental illness.
