I made this door mat from 3/4" manila rope 40 years ago as a present for my mother and father-in-law. My wife and I now have it and can't seem to wear it out. That is a very durable mat.
My grandmother made them also and I think she still had a couple handed down by her grandmother.Reminds me of the rag rugs my grandmother use to make. She would cut old rags into thin strips and tightly braid them into a long rope and sew them together. We had several of them around the house - one was an oval shaped rug that was at least 20 feet long and 10 feet wide.
If you google "ocean plait mat" you will get many hits. Here is oneA very nice gift. I know how much work went into implementing that design!
So, what length of rope did it take to create that?
