This is a Byrd Cara Cara (Spyderco's imported low-cost version of the Endura, with a comet-shaped opening hole) that I have Dremeled to create a pocket hook (like the Emerson Wave -- the Wave is patented, so if you do this it has to be your own knife you're modifying).

The stainless knife is nice and solid (and very inexpensive) but needs no-slip grip tape -- in this case, Duck-brand Stair Tape -- to give it decent traction in the hand:

The resulting knife snaps open as it is drawn from the pocket and feels great in my mitts:

I took a small video clip of the knife popping open as it is drawn (prior to applying the grip tape, if you care):

Phil, are giving Mitchell, on TPI, a run for his money?:biggrin2:

You don't find the body-side grip-tape too "grippy"?

i made a couple a year or so ago and found the really hard part was to get the cutout properly configured so that they also made handy beer bottle openers LOL :buttkick:

No, I'm an amateur and I don't really enjoy the metalwor -- I just wanted to see if I could do it. One of the reasons I chose this Byrd was because if I botched it I could replace it cheaply.

No, absolutely not. It feels rock solid in the hand but has never felt too abrasive to me.

Forgive me guys but I'm unfamiliar with the knife. I'm having trouble visualizing how this is kept in the pocket and opens as you pull it out. I don't see a clip on the knife unless it's not showing in the pics. :embarassed:

Exposure - look at pic #4 and 5 I think it is - std pocket clip.

The vid shows well how it opens and that open part that has been Dremelled points up in pocket - so on the draw it ''snags'' pocket fabric and so gives an assisted opening.

Dah...now I see the clip in the pics. Also had to download another player to see the video. Thanks.
