I might be purchasing a Ruger Mini-14 for a decent price from a family member. I'll be able to test it thoroughly before I buy it. If it proves to be very reliable and accurate enough to hit a man sized target at 100 yards then I'll get it. It's only use is for fun plinking and shtf duties. So inherent accuracy isn't important, only practical accuracy matters.

It's an early model and is blued. I won't go to crazy with mods. Only add a buttstock spare mag holder, sling, and maybe a Surefire. I do want to add some form of flash hider, but I refuse to use the crappy pin-on ones from cheaperthandirt.com. So is there any way I can thread the muzzle and add a Vortex flash hider? Or will this be tgotally illegal?

No it would NOT be illegal to add a threaded flash hider onto your Mini~14.

Actually, some of the pin on flash hiders are quite good.
Like anything else...it just depends on exactly which one you buy.
Some of the better ones are so nicely machined & fit so close that they will never work loose and they work just great.

That being said Yes, you can have a threaded flash hider installed on your Mini~14.
Truthfully, you can have ANYTHING done to your Mini 14 these days.
The full blown Mini~14s are a sight to behold!

CLICK ON THIS MINI 14 LINK

You really must check out the above link to that total custom "14" page. :yup: It's a LONG page. Scroll down to the pics! :biggrin2:

Around here lots of people are putting 1/2-28 TPI on them.

Thats the same thread as the AR and it opens up a lot more options...
even so, lots of people put the standard birdcage flash suppressor on them. It looks pretty good.

QKSHOOTER you are killing me with that link. Since I've seen those rifles I will now have to spend half a years gun money to make my Mini-14 (if I get it) into one of the coolest tactical rifles on the planet.

How does this sound? Standard Package blued. Get the 16" bull barrel with the linear brake. Add a 3 blade tritium front sight. "Urban Brawler" handguard, might be the single coolest mod for the Mini-14 and I can add an EoTech or Aim-Point to it. Replace the factory stock with a black/grey laminate stock. Also have a small picitanny rail added to the side of the stock for a Surefire light. All coated in a black Duracoat or whatever they have thats black and durable.

Sounds about perfect, but a little expensive. I better start saving my pennies.

Yep, join the club...start saving!
That sounds real good.
They do nice tight work. :king:
I've not ever had any work done by them but, I have handled a custom rifle done by them.
Beautiful workmanship & the owner was extremely happy with it....if that info helps.

Yeah some of those Minis are really cool looking. And a little more unique than an AR.

My old Mini has a brake (forget source) which is secured by four set screws - not ideal initially but I machined four ''dimples'' at 90º and then did the thing up on those with locktite - it has never moved. While front sight was off (boy, was that ever a **** to remove!) added a ventilated handguard also.

I could have set the thing up in lathe to thread it but was too darned lazy!
