HB 693, our self defense bill, was shot down in flames on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The vote was straight Party Line, 7 Democrats against, 5 Republicans for.

This bill would have given us statutory brandishing and no duty to retreat exemptions. These situations continue to exist now, as before, in that vast gray area in the law books, leaving us at the whims of County Attorneys to prosecute or not. Historically, they have rarely, if ever, prosecuted legitimate self defense shootings, so we can hope that common sense will continue to prevail at the county level. It's certainly non-existant in the State Legislature.

Oh, well, there's always the 2007 session. Maybe the Republicans will re-gain control by then.

Update

I just ran across this press release from the Montana Shooting Sports Association today. This disturbs me. If this is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, then the NRA, for all intents & purposes, is a sham. I can't imagine any reason why the NRA would refuse to support this legislation. What do you guys think?

Disturbs me too -
"The conduct of Randy Kozuch is not in the best interest of the efforts of law abiding gun owners nor the NRA. His actions have the same effect as sabotage -- no different result than if he were a plant by the anti-gunners."
I am appalled at what I read, and will be making one or two ''inquiries'' I think!

Hi All
For those of us fortunate to live in Montana - one of the NRA directors is
our former Sheriff - Jay Printz. Jay lives in Hamilton and has just returned
home from a year in Iraq. Jay has always been very supportive of CCW
for us here. I am not at home right now so I don't have contact info for
Jay locally but I believe there is a way to contact him through the NRA
site.
