I am trying to figure out what would be the best ammunition for me to carry in my XD40. Currently I load Remington 180gr hollow points.
Any suggestions?

I don't shoot .40 but do like GD's in other flavors - clean rounds, quite low flash and bullet design that I rate for expansion.

That said - take a peek too at the results Steve Camp has had from various rounds and bullets over on http://www.highpowersandhandguns.com/

Of prime concern to me always will be whether a specific platform will reliably digest a particular round - gun reliability will come ahead of just defensive performance. Let's say - effective delivery of the message matters more than what is written in the letter

I use the Winchester Ranger 180 grain in my Glocks. But IMO any of the premium SD ammo is good. As Chris said, just make sure it works well in YOUR gun and carry with confidence.

Something that functions very reliably in your weapon and something over the 155's. If you handload, take a close look at the Hornady XTP's. I have never known(with proper OAL and crimp) a XTP not to function in a simi-auto. --------

I'm sure that I'll be redirected to a thread from years ago :) but I've always been told that it was a no-no to handload defensive rounds?

Indeed - oft discussed that is! Daresay a search on ''handloads'' would bring something up.

Opinion varies and seemingly no prime face case to prove the risk.

However - looking at the odds, does seem better to be using factory, and even better maybe the same stuff local PD uses too.

I'm sure that down below my post you'll find disagrements, but this is how I feel about it.

A "good" shoot is a "good" shoot. We all need to be absolutely as much in the right as possible. I will always respond with force(lethal or otherwise) only when force is directed at me or my family. The last thing on earth that I want to do is take a life as a civilian. But if the BG forces me to defend myself I will have to do just that. Nobody else will interveen on my behalf. It's me against them. He's invited me to a gunfight and I'm sure as hell gonna bring my gun.

I'm sure that I will dread the aftermath of the incident. What with all the lawyers and the "my poor son never did a wrong thing in his life" kinda crapploa.

But one of the last things that I would worry about would be weather my ammo was handloaded and what the lawyers would make of it.

Again,a good shoot is a good shoot.----------

I'll always be a Winchester Ranger T fan. If my gun didn't eat them, I'd probably get it worked on so it did. But that's just me. Anything MODERN that feeds and fires will work. Do stick with the heavier bullets though, they tend to perform better through clothing (as per FBI tests).

Really in forty, I do not think it makes any difference. In all of the testing I ahve been involved with, we have not found a bad forty round. Any quality JHP in any weight should do the job if you do yours.

RSSZ,

No disrespect intended regarding handloads. You do not need to convince me - just a panel of your peers that more likely than not will contain a few "bright, happy, shiny people that hate guns."

I agree that a good shoot should be all that matters but logic doesn't seem to apply in some cases.
