A Carry Gun COULD HAVE ended this scenario Promptly but, this happened in Merry Old England the Land Of Flimsy Kitchen Knives & Sticks.

Kayleigh Thorton, 20, from Plymouth suffered severe arm and leg injuries and was taken to Derriford Hospital for surgery. A second woman was also hurt.

Three men had tried to drag the bull mastiff-type dog off the women before Chris Davis, 23, used two of his mother's kitchen knives to kill it.

The incident happened in Manifold Gardens in the Efford area of the city at about 1010 BST.

A hospital spokeswoman has described Ms Thornton's condition as stable.

Ms Thornton is thought to have been looking after the dog at a house in the area.

It is thought she was attacked after trying to intervene when the animal bit a 31-year-old woman who had come to the front door.

Mr Davis said he went to help after hearing one of the women's screams.


"Another man was already using a big stick, but the dog just wouldn't let go and was dragging her up and down the path," he said.

"There was blood everywhere and it was like something from a horror movie."

He added: "The guys were screaming, the girl's screaming so I ran in home, grabbed two kitchen knives from my mum's knife block, and ran up there.

"The girl - she saw I had a knife, and then she started screaming 'Stab it, get it off'.

"I didn't want to hurt the dog, I just wanted to get it off the girl. So I stabbed it in the head and one of the knives snapped so I grabbed the other knife which I had and started stabbing it in the back.

Dog collapsed

Mr Davis described the dog as "huge and angry" and said it had "gone berserk".

He described how he stabbed the animal about 20 times before it started to stagger and released the woman's arm.

"I've no idea who the woman was, but her screaming will haunt me for a long time," he added.

Mr Davis said the dog collapsed and died while the woman was being taken away to hospital.

Not dangerous breed

The 31-year-old woman also received treatment for injuries sustained in the attack.

Although he was not bitten by the dog, Mr Davis suffered scratches on both arms and will be given a tetanus injection.

He said the whole incident probably lasted no more than about 10 minutes.

The dog's body was taken away by Plymouth City Council.

Sgt Alan Mobbs of Devon and Cornwall Police said the dog was not classed as a dangerous breed. Its owner has now been traced.

Well - without getting into a ''dangerous breeds'' dispute on the thread - it is simple enough to say this dog was most certainly dangerous and off its rocker.

Good for the guy re getting a means of dealing with the animal but certainly a pity he had to make do with what were possibly ''made in China'' quality kitchen knives!

That was for all probably a very extended 10 minutes - of course a gun would have helped a lot but - it is apparent too, any use of a gun would have to have been very skillful to avoid third party injuries.

From the sounds of it, if the guy could stab it 20 times, would seem that someone carrying could have had an easy sideways pointblank headshot or heartshot after checking the exit side.

I guess this idiot never heard of the throat? The dog's mouth is on the woman's arm, cut his throat, or stab in the left side behind the front leg. At least do something that will have an effect. If it takes 20 stabs in the back you need to try a different approach.

I have notice that not many people know how to respond to a dog attack and that is a shame. In most instances it is not an extremely difficult thing. It does require that you think about the possibility and determine how to respond prior to being attacked. I guess this falls under the politically incorrect label of personal responsibility.

I have been attacked by a dog and except for teeth marks on my watch crystal and some scratches on my left arm I suffered no injury. The dog on the otherhand died. I did not carry at the time and was able to hold the dog long enough for my wife to go in the house and get an S&W revolver. I did not use my knife because of the neighbor children close by and the fact that I only had the dog by the throat with my left hand and was not controlling the body. I was concerned that he would jump just as I started to cut his throat and that I would end up having the knife cut me. If this happened I thought I might turn loose and the kids might get hurt. A .32 S&W Long hollow point behind the ear solved the problem - instantly. Barely kicked. I learned the next day that the dog cannot be tested for rabies if the brain is not intact.

Note to self: Next time shoot behind the front leg through the body.

BTW: the dog that attacked me only weighted between 75 and 80 pounds not the size of a mastiff. Plenty big enough to be dangerous though.

I agree so much! The poor outcome of lack of thinking always turns out to be the dog's fault or some junk about bad dog breeds or whatever. "Require that you think" -- this needs to be engraved in some people's heads. We've raised a lot of dogs over the past 20 years from animal shelters to ones found on the road (have 8 right now) and if you've got an anti-attack plan, usually you won't get attacked. I suspect you know that as well. But, when it does happen, you've got to be direct, fast and forceful. Dogs that are going nuts don't understand anything else. Like criminals.....

I was always told that if a dog charges and leaps to fold its front paws back, think of a wrist lock. For pulling a dog off of another person, grab it's lips and pull rearward, once the dogs mouth is clear think of a full nelson and lay the dog on its side and lay ontop of it.
This isn't a end all but it might help.

After outlawing cricket bats if dog attacks are numerous they require all dog owners to have their dog's teeth pulled.:rofl:

I think the guy did pretty well. He had the forsight to get two knives, and the throat is pretty close to the jaws, and the parts of the victim that are in the jaws. It's real easy to criticize from behind a keyboard. Remember, this is a society that has just about been trained to think of self-defense as illegal, much less the defense of others. It's the story on a call by British doctors to ban kitchen knives.

My question: What happens when someone calls the police and an unarmed cop responds? Does he have to douse the woman and dog in OC and hope it works, or try to shock them both with a taser?
I know more police in GB are armed now, but I believe there are plenty who go without firearms...

Does he in turn have to call backup to try to get a gun on the scene while the woman is getting killed by a giant dog? Does that not seem insane?

Again...the average Brit has no concept of personal defense...."the Crown" will defend them....except when it is a 150lbs dog or a perp with a weapon wanting to hurt/rape/maim/kill you--in which case, be a polite victim and get a description, but don't defend yourself (rant /off)
