Hi guys and girls,

im new in this part of town. just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. a month ago, when started a search for my first firearm for home defense, i began looking for options to conceal a weapon while out and about the city and came across this site...WOW...i exclaimed with great relish! here was a whole community of people who have the same concerns for the well being of their families and personal safety as i do.

To be perfectly honest with you, while researching firearms and CCW options i started to feel weird, like i was doing something wrong by wanting to carry a weapon to defend myself and my family. but then i found this community and realized that it IS a fundamental right for the good citizens of this country to bear arms, and there is no need to feel weird about wanting to carry a weapon.

as you can see i live in chicago, one of the best cities in the WORLD in my opinion. but after last summer when 36 chicago public school kids were shot (thats just kids over a 3 month period, not including adults) i decided that it was not only justifiable, but necessary to procure a firearm to protect my new family...my beautiful wife and 16 month old daughter.

so thank you DC community for making me feel "normal" again. next step, get my FOID card...my G19 (i think thats what im going with, but id like to try one first)...and my CCW option. im still a college student and spend a lot of time pounding the pavement around campus, which is in a terrible hood, so i think im going with this: BLACKHAWK! Covert Carry Messenger Bag - BLACKHAWK!

i look forward to talking with all of you...or some of you.
peace, if possible...

First off welcome to the forum.

While I applaud your desire to protect yourself and your family, you are living in probably the most gun unfriendly city in the US. Not to mention State in the union. While a gun in your home will be possible once you have jumped through the hoops and obtained a FOID, you still will not be allowed to carry outside of your property. A CC permit does not exist in the state of Illinois, and they do not recognize any other states permit. If your caught carrying, rest assured your wife and child will be without a husband/father, and you'll have a cellmate named Big Bubba or Crusher or something similar .If you truly want to protect your family and yourself, get out of IL, and Chicago and find a gun friendly place to resettle.
Welcome!! You will find a ton of great info on this forum.
I assume you already know this, but you can’t get a CCW permit in IL. Make sure you read the laws for yourself. I am not a lawyer, so take this all with a grain of salt, but I grew up and spent most of my life in IL.
Some people will tell you that you can carry an UNLOADED handgun and a loaded magazine in a fanny pack (or other case) while in public. While this MAY (IANAL) be technically correct, please realize that it is an almost certainly that you will be arrested if you are found carrying a weapon in this manner. You will then find yourself in an expensive, time consuming legal battle that may very well damage your reputation, financial security and your liberty.
I hope someday Illinois will realize that people that wish to protect themselves and their loved ones from criminals are not criminals.

Good luck and enjoy the site!

Welcome from Kansas! The Glock 19 is an excellent choice, it's what I carry daily.

Like others have said, you're in the negative zone as far as guns and freedom go where you currently reside. It's simple: just move to another state (I know I know it's not simple). There are some upcoming high profile legal battles getting ready to break out in Illinois and while I hope the constitution wins, I know change will be a ways down the road. Triple check the laws where you live before you get into trouble. Best of luck to you, your family, and the rest of the good people of Illinois.
