Some folks carry a Primary gun as their main defensive sidearm. Some carry a secondary, backup (or BUG) at times, or in addition to the primary.

I'm interested in the frequency of carrying which one(s). Use the poll choices as an approximation of how frequently you carry each one.

Question: Over the past year, when you carry a gun how often is it that you find yourself with your Primary vs your BUG?

To clarify, consider the following to be true for the purposes of this poll:
  • Your primary is your full-power gun that you consider as your main weapon.
  • Your secondary or BUG is considered one of the following:
    • A lower-powered or seriously smaller alternative to your primary gun; or
    • Your second gun, if you carry two.

I dont carry a BUG at all, only extra mags. All my hadguns would be considered "primary" regardless of caliber.

No BUGs here so I selected 100/0% in order to play ~

I'm a bit confused by your question. If I'm only carrying one gun, by definition, that gun is not a BUG.
My intent: If you have a full-power and a reduced-power gun, which do you choose; if you have two guns, do you bring the second.

So, for myself, I've got a CZ P-01, a KelTec PF9 and a NAA Guardian 380. Occasionally, I carry the P-01 and one of the other two. Occasionally, I carry just one of the smaller guns. Thus, when I'm carrying the P-01, I personally define these guns as CZ=primary, others=backup; otherwise, if not carrying the P-01, then the backup is what I'm carrying at that time.

YMMV. Go with it, however you define it.

I only carry my primary, because I have no BUG. Even if I did I would still only carry my primary, perhaps give the BUG to the wifey. She will always carry a lower caliber gun than I will, due to recoil issues. Personally, I would rather carry a knife(s) as a last resort/back-up or additional mags. Maybe sometime in the future (read: when my back account grows) I might get a small revolver for a BUG.

I see what you are getting at, and for me it is two separate questions: I carry a smaller gun quite often for concealabilty reasons, and because if I'm out running my primary gun is way too heavy. I'd give it close to 50/50...maybe 60/40 primary/BUG. My definition of a backup gun, however, is one I'm carrying at the same time as my primary. This has only happened twice with the intention of wanting a backup gun on my person, it has also happened just heading to the range, but I'm not counting that...so to answer this question, I carry a BUG less than 1% of the time.

I'd recommend thinking carefully before doing something like that. Even in small calibers, subcompact autoloaders and small snubnose revolvers often have worse recoil characteristics than full size guns do. They don't afford a good grip on the weapon and there's just not as much mass to help absorb the recoil.

true. My keltec .380 is much snappier than my 9mm XD. ht elighter the gun the more of the energy of recoil you have to absorb yourself.

I'm more like 90%/10%. I always have at least one BUG, unless I'm lounging at home, then I have even more guns at my disposal. That LCP is hard to beat while inside the house. I don't like relying only on a 7 shot .380, I'm more comfortable with 8 shot 9mm, but feel nice and cozy with 16 shot .40. Of course all of them together and you have a party! On duty I also have my Glock 27 in addition to the 22.

I carry two guns on my person anytime I am not at work.

OK, in actuality I only do that about 95% of the time, as the other 5% consist of "taking out the trash". I think I can walk from the house to the curb without my BUG then, but I have been known to be wrong more than once.

At times, in the house, I will carry the BUG and have other weapons accessable. The BUG fits very well inside the pocket of my bathrobe. I didn't vote, as I did not see the option I use most frequently listed. Take care and stay safe.

Confused but answered...

I carry a bug almost all the time. But not all quite all the time. If I leave the property 95% I have both. But the question confused me, is it either or, both and... anyway probably should have put 100/0 but chose 75/25 which would incorporate around the house inside and outside.

:yup:

Same here.

If my normal EDC is a .45 full size (as it is) but I carry a .40 compact sometimes (as I do), it isn't a BUG, IMHO.

The BUG is the Back Up Gun to the Primary firearm, IOMHO.

FWIIW, I have carried a BUG (compact) to a Primary (full size) that is the same caliber and accepts the same mags.

You shouldn't be, given the flexible definition in post #1. Your second rig is a backup; or, your lower-powered alternative to your primary is your backup. If you only have one gun and that's the one with you, then it's your primary, irrespective of power. With those parameters, it should be clear. Go with it, even though it's not your own definition.

Although I voted !00%/0%, I do sometimes slip my BUG on my ankle depending on where I am travelling/going. Always have a BUG in the console of my truck if I am in vehicle. Always have two extra mags for my EDC weapon.

Then how do I understand less than 100% primary, e.g., the last option "Primary 0% / BUG 100%"?

I carry a G26 with a spare mag. I don't carry a BUG because the smaller caliber guns I own are older guns that weigh close to what my Glock weighs. Just too heavy and they are all about the same size as the Glock. I will say that if I had either a P3AT or LCP I would carry that all the time as a BUG.
