Question about visiting an inmate
I am going to be out all day today doing errands and later on tonight I will be visiting a family member who is incarcerated in Connecticut. My question is what advice can you give to me regarding storing my firearm? My first thought is to just leave it at home, any advice is greatly appreciated.

thank you very much. i wasnt sure if we were going to be taking 2 cars and i would leave my car at a friends. but it will be left at home. thank you guys once again
Leave it at home. It's better to be safe than sorry. The only time I had to go to a prison armed was when I was a private detective & had to interview an inmate. I was allowed to store my weapon in a locker where LEOs stored theirs as I was "on duty" & licensed to carry "professionally" but I called ahead & checked first. I had to produce my Armed Private Detective license. I doubt if a citizen with a CCL would ever be allowed to do that.

At many prisons like ANgola in Louisiana, you would be walking about three miles. The last time I was there, they looked inside my car, took a mirror and looked under the car and then opened the hood and truck to see if any weapons were stashed. When I came out, they looked everywhere again to be sure I was not bringing something out and I was there on official business to interview an inmate for a pending court trial. Any weapon they find, you lose as well as being arrested.
Another option I have done:
I had to drive about 200 miles to interview an inmate in a person to person private meeting. Even though I was there on official business, guns were not allowed. I went to the local bus station and rented a locker for $2 and left my gun. Once finished at the prison, I went back to the bus station and retreived my sidearm and cuffs from the locker.

I work at a prison in N.Y. we have people that bring guns in , that being said there are officers at the front gate area that will help you , I would call the C.F. in CT. that you will be visiting and ask what there policy is regarding bringing a ccw , what ID's that they would like to see etc., DO NOT KEEP THE CCW in your car on the facility property !! If CT. is anything like N.Y. you will be seeing the State Police if caught ..

I volunteer at a county jail, I'm not to sure if the same rules apply to a jail as it does a prison but I keep my gun at home when I go there. I still bring my knives with me, but those stay in my car safe of course when I get there. I would say just leave it at home like everyone said. The reason for the rule extending to the parking lot is because a lot of places have may allow the "good" inmate to clean up the lobby or outside area, maybe some landscaping, so they don't want weapons being accessible. I know 9 times out of 10 when I am there is at least one inmate cleaning the lobby, there isn't to much stopping them from just running out there front door in all honesty, well except the couple miles of nothing/woods/swamp. Then there is a county court house right around the corner maybe 200 yards that always has the sheriff (with his car) at it. I suppose they know they won't make it very far. Anyway, that would be why you want to leave it at home.

thanks for all the responses.. i went again last friday and on the way out i asked an officer whats the rules and he stated "what i dont know dont hurt me" and "just take the mag out and place the gun in the trunk locked up". i followed by saying i just dont want to get arrested. he said im okay with guns and if we ever search cars its only for a body lol.
